In this game, each contestant, whether that be [[Kirby]], [[King Dedede]], [[Meta Knight]], or [[Bandana Waddle Dee]], is outfitted with a scholar's cap. Magolor is dressed like a professor with a white mustache. At the start of the game, each contestant is allowed to roam freely before a timer of sixty seconds starts. During this time period, Magolor will ask for a specific book, which the contestants must find. Each time a contestant finds the right book, they gain a point, and the book in question is replaced with a different one. Each tome can have a different binding color and a different character or symbol on its cover. At certain times, the correct book is not shown right away: for example, the book's back is shown instead of the front, with Magolor flipping it, or Magolor removing the dust covering the book's front. At 25 seconds remaining, the "Last Chance" begins, where every book has the same color, and the contestants must find a certain amount of a specific cover. Books collected in the "Last Chance" are golden, and worth twice as many points. If the correct book is not collected after a certain amount of time, it will gain a pulsating glow and the timer will be paused until a player picks the book up. However, this does not happen during the last 25 seconds.

The playing field of Magolor's Tome Trackers consists of three levels of [[thin floor]]s over a wide floor at the bottom. There are gaps in the thin floors in places, and contestants can run off the left side of the screen to appear on the right side, and vice-versa. There are three difficulty levels for Magolor's Tome Trackers: the differences between the levels are the [[CPU]] difficulty and the amount of tomes. At the start, level 1 has five tomes, level 2 has six, and level 3 has eight; after four tomes are grabbed, level 1 gets two additional tomes, level 2 gets five additional tomes, and level 3 gets seven additional tomes.
