Hypernova is a powerful ability introduced in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Obtained only by touching a Miracle Fruit, it grants Kirby a temporary transformation throughout the rest of the stage that exponentially powers up his inhale, and allows him to inhale larger objects and certain Mid-Bosses that cannot be inhaled otherwise, as well as solve some puzzles throughout the game. In that manner, it can be considered similar to Super Abilities from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, just consolidated into a single form.
Hypernova is a special ability that is granted to Kirby whenever he touches a Miracle Fruit in Kirby: Triple Deluxe which turns his stomach into a "veritable black hole", allowing him to inhale and move much larger foes and objects than he could previously. This ability appears regularly throughout stages in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, and is used to solve specialized puzzles as well as battle Mid-Bosses catered specifically to the 'inhale and spit' dynamic of the ability, such as the Mowlee Bros., the Gigant Chicks, and the Winged Eggers. When Kirby has the Hypernova ability, he glows a rainbow color (though with large amounts of yellow on his body) and a special musical theme plays over the regular stage theme.

Unlike most abilities, Kirby does not receive this ability by copying it from an enemy with a similar power, but instead by eating the Miracle Fruit directly. As such, Kirby does not need to give up his current Copy Ability to use it. Also, when Kirby eats the Miracle Fruit, his attire does not change and he does not gain a new weapon; instead, he begins to glow rainbow colors that are shown to move around his body, even when he is not active. If Kirby loses a life with Hypernova, he will respawn with the ability instead of losing it and having to go back to get it. This is one of the few cases in the series where this happens. After Kirby finishes a stage, Hypernova is lost, but the ability he had before eating the Miracle Fruit is returned.
Hypernova is not a regular Copy Ability, but it is a Special Ability which is similar to an item effect (such as Invincible Candy or Mint Leaf) and the Super Abilities from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, since the ability is acquired from an item and "overrides" Kirby's current Copy Ability. Unlike the Super Abilities, however, Kirby's Copy Ability before activating Hypernova will be returned to him at the end of the stage when Hypernova wears off. Additionally, Hypernova cannot be taken out of the stage it appears in by pausing and exiting from the menu. Since its debut in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Hypernova has not appeared as an ability in any other Kirby game, though it has been referenced here and there.

Hypernova is usually found in one or two stages per level. Although there are not many attacks for the ability besides having an amplified inhale, this allows Kirby to move backwards and forwards while inhaling, and it is used to easily defeat most mid-bosses (and some real bosses). At about the halfway point of certain stages, Kirby will walk into a flat expanse and see a small sprout. This sprout will rapidly grow until it bears a Miracle Fruit. Kirby cannot leave the area until he grabs it either by jumping into the fruit or by inhaling it. Regardless of how it's consumed, he gains the Hypernova ability shortly afterwards.
Hypernova is an exceedingly simple ability to use, as it is essentially just a powered-up version of Kirby's regular inhale ability. The entirety of Hypernova's moveset can be lain out as follows:

Hypernova enables Kirby to inhale large objects he otherwise couldn't, but the key difference it has from Kirby's normal moveset is Inhale and Move, which allows Kirby to use his inhale while walking forward or backward (an ability he normally does not have in this game). This move allows him to pull on large objects via suction, allowing him to solve puzzles that require objects to be moved around. Walking backwards while inhaling is also necessary to activate certain devices such as the ball and chain in Fine Fields - Stage 1, or defeat certain enemies, such as the Land Barbar.

The Hypernova Inhale can also be used to power certain devices, such as the fan-operated drills in Endless Explosions - Stage 4. Hypernova Kirby cannot jump while using Inhale and Move, nor can he turn around. Additionally, when attempting to inhale something, the object in question needs to be more-or-less on the same elevation as Kirby, or it will not be affected.

Oftentimes, when Kirby uses his Hypernova Inhale, he will swallow whatever he inhales automatically. However, if the object cannot be swallowed up entirely, it will stick to Kirby's lips instead. When this happens, the player can press the B button to make Kirby spit that object back, which is often used to battle foes such as the Mowlee Bros., the cannon tower, or the Waddle Dee Steel Fortress. When Kirby has something stuck to his lips, he cannot move, and his jump is reduced to a very short hop (though he can still turn in place).

Against more traditional Mid-Bosses and even bosses like Flowery Woods, Kirby will inhale them immediately, as demonstrated in Royal Road - Stage 5. Notably, unlike Kirby's regular inhale, enemies and objects that are drawn in using Hypernova Inhale will fly inward using a smooth circling vortex pattern, a detail that is specifically pointed out on Miiverse by the game's developers.

As briefly mentioned above, Hypernova is not a proper Copy Ability, though it does share elements with them, such as a HUD icon, pause description, and distinct look for Kirby. When Kirby picks up Hypernova, it will "override" any previous Copy Ability he had. From then on, Hypernova cannot be discarded, except when Kirby completes the stage or the stage is otherwise exited (via a pause/exit from the menu or a Game Over). When Hypernova is removed, Kirby will be given back the ability he had prior to obtaining it (unless he was defeated while using Hypernova, in which case he will have no ability).

The ability is necessary to finish the stage, as there are usually several large blocks and other objects that Kirby couldn't move on his own. Several of the stages that involve Hypernova also have a special mid-boss. These enemies are usually fought by sucking up their own projectiles and shooting them back at a weak spot. These bosses are also usually fought in groups, with three or four enemies fought at the same time or three or four enemies fought separately, one right after the other. In Royal Road - Stage 5, the Hypernova ability is even used to inhale Flowery Woods in a somewhat humorous sequence that involves its health bar on the HUD "peeling" off, which breaks the fourth wall.
clear

This ability is also used in the final boss fight against Flowered Sectonia in place of a Last Battle Ability, and is used to deal the final blow by sucking up Sectonia's own laser (as well as her health bar) and shooting it right back at the Queen.
Game appearances
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Hypernova first appeared as an ability in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, and has not appeared in that capacity in any subsequent Kirby game. Kirby first gains this ability when he encounters the Miracle Fruit in Fine Fields - Stage 1, and from there, Hypernova is a regular fixture in a handful of stages, with many puzzles, environmental hazards, and mid-bosses built around its use and function. However, Hypernova is not used in any proper boss fights until the very end of Story Mode, when Kirby is gifted a Miracle Fruit by King Dedede and Taranza in order to finish off Flowered Sectonia. Using the ability, Kirby parries all of Flowered Sectonia's projectiles and defeats her eye stalks, and then inhales her giant laser attack, finishing her off by spitting this laser back at her.

Moveset
Upon reaching 100% completion, Hypernova Kirby will also appear on the game's title screen.
Hypernova doesn't have a very large moveset (only 2 moves), as can be expected due to its similarity to Super Abilities. To use the Hypernova Inhale, the player simply has to hold the B button. This will go continuously until Kirby either inhales an object, or becomes tired and rests (similar to finishing a Super Inhale in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad). Some items can't be completely inhaled, and will simply get stuck on Kirby's mouth. When the player pushes B in this state, the item will be shot back. The other move is Inhale and Move, which is just Kirby moving left and right while inhaling, so that he can pull objects to clear paths or make step-stools. The player can perform this by using the Circle Pad or +Control Pad while pressing B. This combination is used to solve many puzzles in the game. Kirby will not walk off the edges of platforms while using Inhale and Move.

In the Kirby novel series, the Hypernova ability appears in Kirby and the Big Panic in Gloomy Woods!, where Kirby uses it to stop the Woodkeeper from stealing the Stardust Crystal.

In Kirby and the Big Panic in Gloomy Woods!, Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight make their way to the Woodkeeper's hut because he had stolen the Stardust Crystal. Just as they arrive, the ground begins shaking below them, and the small house is suddenly released from the ground as the chimney transforms into a large propeller, allowing it to fly as a vehicle. Kirby attempts to inhale the now-transformed house, but it is no use. Kirby thinks he is too weak just because he is hungry, and finds a nearby Miracle Fruit. As soon as Kirby inhales it in one gulp, his body starts glowing with a rainbow-colored light, and he senses unusual energy flowing within him. With his focus back on the "Woodkeeper" flying away, Kirby unleashes his mighty Hypernova Inhale, which causes the helicopter house to come crashing down into Kirby's mouth. After Kirby successfully inhales it all, he realizes that he also inhaled the treasure, which makes King Dedede lose his temper. Dedede grabs Kirby and squishes him until everything is spit back out, returning Kirby back to his usual pink self.

It is notable that earlier in the story, King Dedede finds a Miracle Fruit and bites into it, but nothing happens to him. This suggests that only Kirby is capable of getting the Hypernova ability.

Eating a Miracle Fruit imbues Kirby with this special ability. After an explosion of energy, Kirby's stomach becomes a veritable black hole, allowing him to inhale giant objects!
— Kirby: Triple Deluxe American English pause caption

Overview and details[edit]

Kirby using Hypernova's "Inhale and Move" power to solve an environmental puzzle in Royal Road - Stage 3.
You can obtain the Hypernova ability by eating a Miracle Fruit. This enables Kirby to inhale massive objects that he couldn’t inhale normally. It is a very useful ability, as it allows Kirby to inhale large stones or missiles and spit them at enemies, as well as move big obstacles to uncover Sun Stones. You should definitely give this new ability a try!
— Satoshi Ishida, Miiverse post on 06/02/2014 9:09 AM

Hypernova is an exceedingly simple ability to use, as it is essentially just a powered-up version of Kirby's regular inhale ability. The entirety of Hypernova's moveset can be lain out as follows:

Hypernova enables Kirby to inhale large objects he otherwise couldn't, but the key difference it has from Kirby's normal moveset is Inhale and Move, which allows Kirby to use his inhale while walking forward or backward (an ability he normally does not have in this game). This move allows him to pull on large objects via suction, allowing him to solve puzzles that require objects to be moved around.

Notably, unlike Kirby's regular inhale, enemies and objects that are drawn in using Hypernova Inhale will fly inward using a smooth circling vortex pattern, a detail that is specifically pointed out on Miiverse by the game's developers.[1]

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Kirby swallowing Flowered Sectonia's laser using Hypernova during the final battle.

Upon reaching 100% completion, Hypernova Kirby will also appear on the game's title screen.

Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe[edit]

At the end of the Secret Stages in Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, Hypernova Kirby's face is in the background of the goal drum instead of normal Kirby's.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, a sticker resembling the HUD icon for Hypernova can be collected. It is not a rare sticker, so it can be found anywhere.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, a Character Treat depicting Hypernova Kirby can be collected.

In the Kirby novel series[edit]

Kirby pulls the Woodkeeper back with his Hypernova inhale, as seen in Kirby and the Big Panic in Gloomy Woods!

British English:
Eating Miracle Fruit from the Dreamstalk imbues Kirby with this special ability. After an energy explosion, Kirby's stomach becomes a veritable black hole, allowing him to inhale giant objects!

Trivia[edit]

 • Hypernova's name contradicts its use. A hypernova is a type of supernova explosion (when a star explodes), but the use of the ability is akin more to a black hole, or an implosion. However, a star that goes hypernova is massive enough to turn into a black hole, so this could be where the name comes from.
 • On the official Kirby: Triple Deluxe website, there is a "Hypernova Yourself" feature. This takes an image and expands the mouth area, and adds a rainbow tint, to make the object of the photo appear to be using the Hypernova inhale.
 • In most games since Kirby: Triple Deluxe, King Dedede's inhale attack (including his other forms) has a significantly increased range, and has been named ビッグバンすいこみ (the Japanese name of Hypernova Inhale) in Japanese.

 1. "Those who've played the game will know that when you use Hypernova Inhale on a large number of objects, such as the Star Blocks in the attached screenshot, they'll all be sucked up in one swift, smooth spiral. That may not seem remarkable, but if you use the normal Inhale ability on a large number of objects, they'll clatter and move jerkily - there's nothing smooth about it at all. It's that change from the clunky Inhale to the super-smooth Hypernova Inhale that makes Hypernova so much fun to use! It wasn't easy to program, though, I can tell you." --Satoshi Ishida quoting the programming director for Kirby: Triple Deluxe on Miiverse, posted on 09/08/2014, 9:25 AM
