Whip Challenge is the second Challenge Stage unlocked in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It tests Kirby's proficiency with the Whip Copy Ability in a series of chambers, where the goal is to defeat all the enemies and collect all the coins as quickly as possible. The window of time to earn a Platinum Medal is 0:30 or higher.

Layout

There are two main areas and two side areas in this challenge stage.

The first main area starts Kirby off in a room with a step to the right, inside of which are some Score Coins and on top of which is a Whippy. Using the Whip, Kirby can grab the coins from inside the stair, then defeat the Whippy and move to the right. Moving forward, there are more coins hidden in pockets inside the ceiling and floor which Kirby will need to get as he deals with the three Waddle Dees up ahead, along with two Bronto Burts inside a small ceiling niche. From there, the path moves up some thin floors past more coins and Bronto Burts spaced widely apart. Heading right again, a switch can be found in the ceiling past the blockade of Waddle Dees and Whippy on Star Blocks which lowers a section of the floor and reveals a door to the first side area. In this area is a set of two switches which open shutters that subsequently close quickly, leading to a large cache of coins. Back on the main path, past steps containing two more Whippys in pockets in the floor, the door can be found to the next main area. However, there is one more coin to grab here, positioned atop a Bomb Block barrier that can be set off in the floor below the door. Kirby will need to be quick to grab the coin before it falls into the abyss.

The second main area starts by activating a switch to cause the floor Kirby is standing on to move upward. As he rides this elevator up, he will need to defeat the enemies above while grabbing the coins in the walls. This leads into a second elevator section which moves quicker than the first. Upon reaching the top, a switch can be hit to open the way to the second side area just to the right. In this side room, Kirby will need to move quickly past the Hot Heads to grab some coins before a conveyor belt drags them into the abyss below. Back on the main path, Kirby needs to leap up some thin floors and defeat the Foleys hanging above them. After riding one more quick elevator, Kirby reaches the stage exit room, which has lots of enemies inside it that need to be defeated quickly.

In Extra Mode, there are more coins scattered about, prompting Kirby to position himself in different places than he might have otherwise.

Tips

There are a few things to keep in mind when aiming for Platinum on this stage, though it should be noted that the strategies listed here are by no means the only ones that will do the job:

  • It is crucial to become proficient at activating and maintaining 100-Whip Slap consistently, particularly on the elevator sections.
  • Whip Strike has a slightly longer range than 100-Whip Slap and 100-Whip Dash.
  • Whip Tornado is very useful for clearing out enemies and grabbing coins in a wide area above and around Kirby. Kirby can also drift to the left or right while performing this move. This is particularly useful in the first side area.
  • When opening the door to the first side area, it can save time to wait until afterward to grab the remaining coins in the floor cache on the left, as Kirby will have a better vantage point to whip them due to the floor being reset to its original height.
