"The King and the Sun"[conjectural title] is a theme from Kirby Super Star Ultra that plays during the Revenge of the King staff credits cutscene. It serves as a parody version of the similarly named "My Friend and the Sunset".

Composition[edit]

The dejected King and Waddle Dees walk by the setting sun.

"The King and the Sun" is an arrangement of "King Dedede's Theme", stylized to sound like "My Friend and the Sunset", capitalizing on their innate similarity. As such, it is set in A minor and 6/8 time, and has similar instrumentation. It features a descending variant of the intro and accompaniment from "My Friend and the Sunset", followed by the second ("Peanut Plains") section of "King Dedede's Theme". Near its latter half, the theme diverges and resolves to tonic. From here, the first section of "King Dedede's Theme" continues. It gives way to a final section close to the second element of "My Friend and the Sunset" and diverged second phrase from "King Dedede's Theme". This stays in a prolonged dominant before looping.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, the theme plays during the cutscene "The King and the Sun" at the end of Revenge of the King, which can be found as track 088 in the Sound Test. A short version of this theme serves as the title theme of the same game mode, mirroring "Revenge of Meta Knight: Title" in its jingle-like nature, found in the Sound Test as track 085. The title screen version was arranged by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, a jingle derived from "The King and the Sun" (similar to the Revenge of the King title theme) plays whenever King Dedede enters a Warp Hole shorcut in Dededetour!. This version is titled "Royal Warp"[2] and was arranged by Hirokazu Ando.[1]

Additionally, the original version of the Revenge of the King title screen jingle plays upon clearing a level or getting a Game Over in Dededetour!.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, "Royal Warp" plays on the splash screen before fighting Team DDD.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

In Kirby Fighters 2, a faithful arrangement of "The King and the Sun" appears alongside "Kirby Fighters 2: The Destined Rivals" as the true ending staff credits cutscene. A major variation with its characteristic rhythm plays during the epilogue of the Final Chapter of Story Mode: The Destined Rivals alongside the game's aforementioned leitmotif and "My Friend and the Sunset".
