Categories are special pages that allow for the easy collection and display of many pages and files into directories. Creating a category page is a simple affair, but remembering to link all the appropriate disparate articles and files is tricky even for the best editors. The following guide will briefly explain how to create a category page and how to link to it.

Creating a category page

Creating a category page is largely the same as creating any other page. Enter the preferred name into the search bar or click the appropriate red link to get started. Note that all category pages must start with the text "Category:", or they will not function properly.

To format a category page, the editor may choose to write a short statement describing what the category is for, though leaving the page blank will still create the category (doing this is not recommended, however).

Once the page is made, a bulleted alphabetized list will automatically be created if any articles or files link to that category page already. Subsequent links will automatically add the pages that now link to it into the list.

Linking to categories

To link a page to a category, the editor simply has to place a regular link somewhere in the page, like so:

[[Category:Games in the Kirby series where Kirby's cheek blush does not change color with his color palette swaps]]

Doing this will automatically place a category link at the bottom of the page, with the text itself not appearing in the article proper. Category links of this nature should therefore be placed at the bottom of the page for the sake of other editors who want to find the links later.

If the editor wishes to link to the category page from within the article text, such that it appears on the page without making that page part of the category, use this text instead:

[[:Category:Games in the Kirby series where Kirby's cheek blush does not change color with his color palette swaps]]

When doing this, it is recommended to use a piped link for a cleaner look to the link, like so:

[[:Category:Games in the Kirby series where Kirby's cheek blush does not change color with his color palette swaps|Preferably something shorter]]

For more information on how to properly use categories in articles, see the Category policy page.
