WiKirby:Spoiler referendum

Greetings, Waddle Doos and Waddle Don'ts. It's that time again—time for a new referendum! This time we are discussing how WiKirby should handle spoilers going forward. Recently, a proposal was narrowly passed which considered whether the spoilers template should be done away with. Due to the contentious and close nature of the vote, however, it was decided that, rather than simply doing away with the template, more discussion should be had on what to replace it with, if anything.

Background

Main article: WiKirby:General disclaimer

Historically speaking, WiKirby's spoilers template was originally used to mark any page or section that contained information about late-game content or secrets in games, regardless of how old or well-known that information had become. Later on, this was revised so that the template would only be used on games less than a year old. However, in light of the release of the expansive (in terms of wiki content) Kirby and the Forgotten Land, it is arguably not entirely clear what information on various articles (even if small) should be considered a spoiler or not. Also, it has been argued that the mere existence of names in the KatFL navbox, which cannot reasonably be tagged with the spoilers template, itself constitutes a spoiler, and trying to enforce a spoiler policy on that may only end up creating confusion and chaos. It was additionally argued that the template's presence on an individual page could be a spoiler in and of itself for the reader.

As such, it has been argued that the spoilers template as it is currently being deployed is inadequate to suit the needs of the wiki, and a narrow majority of people agreed to do away with it in the recent proposal. The question that remains is what, if anything, should be done in its place, and how should spoilers be handled in the future? That is what we are here to decide. Spoilers can be particularly sensitive to some, while others are indifferent and casual about them, so we hope to find a respectful and reasonable middle ground for the community to agree on through this referendum.

The following is the current spoilers template in question for reference. It is typically seen at the top of pages, or within a specific spoilery section further down:

Spoilers! Notice: Stop right there, stubby little pink thing!
Spoilers abound! If you do not wish to read them, skip ahead to the next heading or find a different article.

The vote

In order to decide how to proceed, we are asking you, the WiKirby community, to vote on how the site should handle spoilers going forward. We have narrowed things down to four options, as follows:

  1. Option 1 - Completely remove the spoilers template, full stop.
  2. Option 2 - Completely remove the spoilers template, but retain a permanent spoilers warning on the sitenotice bar.
  3. Option 3 - Retain the current template, but only on major (high traffic or otherwise front-facing) pages.
  4. Option 4 - Reverse the proposal and retain the template as it was previously being used.

In addition, should it be decided that the spoilers template stays (Options 3 and 4), a few options to change how it functions are as follows:

  1. Option A - Do not change the template.
  2. Option B - Change the template so that it collapses text that can be considered spoilery.
  3. Option C - Place a general disclaimer at the top of the article stating which game(s) it spoils.
  4. Option D - Other (please specify).

Voting procedure and deadline

Each registered user will be allowed to vote in this referendum using the talk page. Votes must consist of a list of the options from each set from most to least preferred. As an example, a user could vote by saying "Option 1, Option 2, Option 3, Option 4; Option A, Option B, Option C, Option D", and it will be ranked per set in descending order. Options will be awarded points per set as follows:

  1. First choice - 3 points
  2. Second choice - 2 points
  3. Third choice - 1 point
  4. Last choice - no points

Users will be allowed to change their votes at any time while the poll is open. Users may also choose less than four options per set, with unchosen options receiving no points. Remember to sign your name on your vote using ~~~~, or it will not be counted!

This vote will run until the 28th of May, 2022 at 11:59:59 p.m. UTC. Once the deadline passes, the score will be tallied and the option with the most points will be selected as the winning choice (the same applies to the options of the second set, should option 3 or 4 win). Each user may only vote once, and any dishonesty on part of users will be punished severely. The talk page may also be used to discuss the options, but the conversation must remain civil, and attempts at campaigning for a choice will be squashed immediately.
