Team Kirby Clash (series)

The Team Kirby Clash series is a multiplayer focused subseries of the Kirby series, starting as a Sub-Game in Kirby: Planet Robobot and later being expanded on with two standalone titles. These titles are, in sequential order: Team Kirby Clash, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, and Super Kirby Clash, with the first two available on Nintendo 3DS and the third being on Nintendo Switch. In all three titles, players can choose between four roles: Sword Hero, Hammer Lord, Beam Mage, and Doctor Healmore. Each role parallels an existing Copy Ability in the mainline Kirby series (those being Sword, Hammer, Beam, and Doctor) and have their own strengths and weaknesses: for example, Hammer Lord has an inherently high damage stat but low movement speed for balance, and Doctor Healmore has unique healing capabilities but is not ideal for directly confronting an enemy. Contrary to the original Copy Abilities, roles are never able to be swapped between or discarded during battle. The series' gameplay revolves exclusively around boss battles (called "Quests") in an entirely flat arena with no hazards, differentiating it from the mainline Kirby series. Defeating a boss grants experience (EXP), which can increase each Kirby's stamina, attack, teammate recovery and Team Meteor damage. Experience gained from a quest is also used as a score, which can grant a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum medal depending on how high the score is, reflecting the performance of the team.

Notably, the two standalone games in this series are free-to-start[1] titles containing microtransactions (in the form of Gem Apples), which also makes them distinct from the main Kirby series. This fact makes the games somewhat controversial among fans of the mainline series, though unlike with some other games that include microtransactions, it is not necessary to spend real world money to complete these games (though this will be difficult and/or time consuming), and each game requires no more than 40 USD to buy everything and complete comfortably.

Team Kirby Clash[edit]

Team Kirby Clash originally released as one of two sub-games in Kirby: Planet Robobot. The concept of the four heroic roles was established here, along with the premise of defeating large enemies within a specified time limit. Additional mechanics unique to the Team Kirby Clash games such as the Revive spell, Beam Mage's time beam ability, Sword Hero's hero shield, and the Team Meteor all got their start here. In addition, the team can level up (to a max level of 10) to increase their stats. The game consists only of six enemy encounters in increasing order of difficulty, and there are no items or equipment to purchase.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe[edit]

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is an expansion of the original Kirby: Planet Robobot sub-game released on Nintendo 3DS, now free-to-start with many new features, including the introduction of interchangeable armor and weapons along with many new quests. Notably, many things in this entry involve using the new currency, Gem Apples. Gem Apples are used as currency with many functions, such as unlocking quests, temporarily improving the performance of Team Kirby using potions, or purchasing new gear to take on stronger foes. Gem Apples are also earned by completing certain Heroic Missions or harvesting them daily from the Gem Apple tree in the village plaza. Despite all of these additions, the core gameplay of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe differs very little in comparison to the original Team Kirby Clash.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Super Kirby Clash released two years after Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, moving the series forward from the Nintendo 3DS to the Nintendo Switch. Super Kirby Clash is essentially a souped-up version of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe; there are a few new features, such as stickers and online multiplayer. Other parts of the game that already existed in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe have been expanded as well: new quests and bosses have been added, a new storyline is included, new music was composed for certain parts of the game (along with existing music being remixed for use in non-major fights), and a few new sets of gear have been made available for all four roles. Quests have been divided into two sections: Story Quests and Party Quests. Story Quests, as their name indicates, contain the main narrative of the game through cutscenes that appear after major quests, such as those that involve fighting Parallel Nightmare. Party Quests are generally more difficult than Story Quests at the time they are unlocked, but have eight Heroic Missions instead of the standard four, are able to be played with online or local multiplayer, and yield higher rewards.
