''Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition'' contains a Wii game disc containing ports of a selection of the first six classic ''Kirby'' games. Also included on the game disc are thirteen new challenge stages based on ''[[Kirby's Return to Dream Land]]'', an interactive timeline of [[Kirby]]'s history where one can read about and watch movies related to the various ''Kirby'' games, and three episodes of the anime series ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]''.

Four of these games—''Kirby's Adventure'', ''Kirby Super Star'', ''Kirby's Dream Land 3'', and ''Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards''—were already available on the Wii [[Virtual Console]]. The emulation is largely identical to those versions.

At launch, ''Kirby's Dream Land'' was also already available on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, making ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'' the only exclusive game in the collection at the time. The Game Boy emulator used for this release is based on the original model, so it does not feature the additional colors and other features available to later Game Boy models and the [[Super Game Boy]].

All games can be played with a Wii Remote, a Classic Controller, or a [[Nintendo GameCube]] controller, and all except for ''Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards'' support the Virtual Console's Suspend Point feature. All games also include digital manuals available on the HOME Menu. Pressing Reset on the HOME Menu will return the player to ''Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition'' rather than the title screen of the game being played; to use each game's native reset function, the player must press A, B, 1, and 2 (A, B, L, and R on a Classic Controller or a GameCube controller).

A frame around the borders of the screen can be toggled on or off by pressing + and - simultaneously on a Wii Remote or Classic Controller. With the NES, SNES, and N64 titles, the frame is blue, and only appears in 16:9 due to the 4:3 display of the games in question; with the Game Boy titles, the frame is pink, and appears even in 4:3 due to the Game Boy having a smaller 10:9 display. If the frame is turned off, it will be replaced by black borders.

In addition, a [[Sub-Game]] exclusive to this collection called [[New Challenge Stages]] can be played, based on the optional challenge rooms from ''[[Kirby's Return to Dream Land]]''. The game has a small story where [[Magolor]] has built a theme park for Kirby to make up for the "fuss" he caused during the events of ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land''.

New Challenge Stages consists of thirteen stages split into three levels, where Kirby gets one or more [[Copy Ability|Copy Abilities]] to work with, and must complete the stage while accumulating a high score. Kirby is scored based on how many enemies he has defeated, how much time there is left on the clock, and how many coins he has collected. At the end of the run, Kirby is given a ranking based on his score: from lowest to highest, bronze, silver, gold, and finally platinum. Each level also contains a boss stage, where Kirby races against Magolor and has his choice of copy ability from a selection based on the level he is in.

Unlike in ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land'', the player can use a Classic Controller or a [[Nintendo GameCube|GameCube]] controller to play the challenge stages, and the game supports the GameCube controller's rumble feature. However, this disables motion controls that are normally available with the Wii Remote (such as shaking the controller to charge up [[Spark]]). New Challenge Stages offers three save files, and the player's progress is tracked individually in each one; as the player's cumulative score across every stage rises, they will be rewarded with [[trophy|trophies]]. Once the game is complete, the credits roll, and Magolor bids Kirby farewell.

Finally, the disc contains an interactive ''Kirby'' history timeline where players can view all of the games in the ''Kirby'' series up until the point of this game's release. The timeline includes worldwide events that happened around the same time the ''Kirby'' game in question was released. If the player selects a game from the timeline, they can view a short video clip on said game (or play it if it is included in the disc) and can view the box of the game in a panoramic mode, as a theme directly from the game plays. Included along with the history are three episodes from the ''Kirby'' anime, ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'' (those episodes being [[Kirby Comes to Cappy Town]], [[Crusade for the Blade]], and [[Waddle While You Work]]), as well as a video performance of "Gourmet Race to Green Greens ~ Chamber Music".<ref name="Official Nintendo Website"/>

An additional disc is included in the game box, referred to as the [[Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Compilation Soundtrack]], which is an audio CD. It features 45 tracks, most of which are selected pieces of music from various ''Kirby'' games, grouped in chronological order of the games' releases. After the tracks taken from ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land'', there are three bonus tracks which are rearrangements of ''Kirby'' songs arranged specifically for this soundtrack.

Lastly, a 45 page booklet is included in the game box, called the ''[[Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Book]]''. This booklet has various details on Kirby's history along with fun facts about most of the games in the series, along with pieces of artwork, concept art, trivia, and more.

==Regional differences==
There are some differences between the Japanese and American versions of the game, owing to the different history of the series between countries. These only apply to the Kirby's History section:

*All box art and game footage was changed to account for the respective regional differences. The world events for each year were also changed.
*The Japanese version has an entry for every year except for 1991 (prior to the release of ''Kirby's Dream Land''), which contains a golden trophy of Kirby. The American version has some blank spots, and because of this, unique trophies were added to the American version: 1994 ([[Lololo & Lalala]]), 1998 ([[Waddle Dee]]), 1999 ([[King Dedede]]), 2007 ([[Meta Knight]]), and 2009 ([[Magolor]]).
*The Japanese version includes samples from licensed ''Kirby'' manga available for reading. These are seen in the entries for 1992 ([[Kirby of the Stars (manga by Yoshiko Sakuma)|''Kirby of the Stars'' by Yoshiko Sakuma]]), 1994 (''[[Kirby of the Stars: The Story of Dedede Who Lives in Pupupu]]''), and 2006 (''[[Kirby of the Stars! Moretsu Pupupu Hour!]]'').
*Some game entries were moved to account for their altered release dates: ''[[Kirby's Dream Course]]'' (1994 in Japan, 1995 in America), ''[[Kirby's Block Ball]]'' (1995 in Japan, 1996 in America), ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'' (1997 in America, 1998 in Japan), and ''[[Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble]]'' (2000 in Japan, 2001 in America).
*The Japanese version includes an entry for [[Kirby's Star Stacker (SNES)|''Kirby's Star Stacker'' for the SNES]], which wasn't released outside of Japan. Inversely, the American version includes an entry for ''[[Kirby's Avalanche|{{KAv KGT}}]]'', which wasn't released in Japan.
*The ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'' section was moved from 2001 to 2002, and the episode screenshots were changed. The episodes included are the same, but use their respective dubbed versions, and naturally include the differences made when dubbing those episodes.
*The Japanese version includes an entry detailing ''Kirby'' arcade games for the year 2007, and an entry detailing [[Kirby 3D]] for the year 2009.
*The American version includes the performance video for "Gourmet Race to Green Greens ~ Chamber Music" under the year 2012, which is absent in the Japanese version.
*Some music was removed from the American version due to these regional differences: for example, the entry for ''Kirby: Right Back at Ya!'' originally played the "Kirby Melee" theme from ''[[Kirby Air Ride]]'', which was changed to the end credit version of "[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya! ==Trivia==
*In the history menu, Kirby has a number of unique [[idle animation]]s if left alone for long enough. He may wave at the player, admire the item he is standing next to, or fall asleep for a moment before waking up again.
*The Staff Credits section of the Celebration Book renders certain letters in the titles and names of staff in distinct colors. Combining these letters yields the words "KIRBY", "KING DEDEDE", "META KNIGHT", and "WADDLE DEE".
**The Japanese version of the Celebration Book does the same for "KIRBY" and "KING DEDEDE". The last two names however come together differently as staff names are in ''kanji'' and ''kana'', rather than Latin characters starting with ''Kirby's Dream Land 2''. "META KNIGHT" still uses Latin characters (though the "N" is drawn from "MANUAL EDITOR" under ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'' rather than Shigenobu Kasai's name under ''Kirby Super Star'').
