Mariels reappear in ''[[Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards|The Crystal Shards]]''. Here, they look and behave similarly as in their first appearance, though they bodies have what appears to be hair or fur growing from them. Just like in ''Kirby's Dream Land 3'', they can be defeated using any attack.

*Mariel could be a reference to Matarael, the 9th Angel from ''[[wikipedia:Neon Genesis Evangelion|Neon Genesis Evangelion]]''. Their appearances are similar concept-wise (spiders with bizarrely huge legs) and both utilize poison/acid in some way. In addition, Mariel's Japanese name (マリエル ''Marieru'') is one character shy from Matarael's (マトリエル ''Matorieru'').
*The credits illustrations for ''Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards'' give the impression that Mariel's natural predator is the frog-like enemy [[Glom]]. This suggests that Glom has some sort of resistance to Mariel's poison.
