This ability is primarily defensive in nature, though it does allow Kirby to land solid blows on foes if he falls on them from above, and also allows him to pound down [[stake]]s and break [[metal block]]s. Depending on the game, Stone Kirby may have other attacks or properties, such as being able to walk around slowly, having an "uppercut" punch attack, or creating a big shockwave upon landing. Many games give Kirby a variety of solid objects to turn into at random when he uses his Stone Change, some rarer than others and many being references to other characters or objects.

Stone is among the simplest and most straightforward of Kirby's Copy Abilities, though it has a lot of variants and emergent uses. In its simplest form, Kirby transforms into a solid immobile object which is affected only by gravity. In this state, Kirby becomes immune to all but the strongest enemy attacks, though this is counterbalanced by the fact that his movement options become extremely limited if not completely absent. Due to the amount of time it often takes for Kirby to use his Stone Change, whether turning into the stone or transforming back to normal, it is often impractical to use Stone offensively, particularly during boss fights. When transformed, Stone Kirby falls extremely quickly, which is useful for certain vertical stage sections, but Kirby should be careful not to fall too far in many places, as he might be lost to a [[bottomless pit]] before he can change back. Falling into a hazardous area like a [[spike]] pit can also be problematic, as Kirby is basically guaranteed to take a hit as soon as he transforms back. One other notable aspect of Stone Kirby in most of his appearances is his ability to slide down slopes, which can be used in many cases to travel quickly and safely through tight tunnels packed with enemies. Stone Kirby's heavy weight also allows him to quickly sink in water, pound [[Stake]]s, and break [[metal block]]s.

While the above describes Stone Kirby in most of his appearances, there are several games where there are notable differences in how the Stone ability functions. In Stone's debut in ''Kirby's Adventure'' (as well as the remake, ''[[Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land]]'') for instance, Kirby does not slide on slopes. In ''[[Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards]]'', Stone Kirby transforms into a full statue of himself that is still able to roll and walk around, but cannot jump. In ''[[Kirby's Dream Buffet]]'', Stone Kirby is more of an offensive power, with the main attack coming from the big shockwave produced by the impact. Stone Kirby makes a few appearances in the anime series ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'', first appearing in the second episode, [[A Blockbuster Battle]]. In the anime, [[Kirby (anime character)|Kirby]] gains a grayish coloration and hat similar to Stone's appearance in ''[[Kirby Super Star]]''.
