U.F.O. is a Copy Ability which allows Kirby to pilot a flying saucer. It is obtained by finding the rare UFO enemy which lurks in hidden rooms throughout the series.

Overview

The U.F.O. ability usually has four ways of attacks which are selected in relation to the charge time.

The U.F.O. ability can move through water and will not convert in to a goggle-wearing Kirby as do the other abilities.

Kirby's Adventure marked the debut of this ability, along with Copy Abilities in general. It can be obtained by swallowing the UFO enemy who appears only once in certain areas, usually hidden rooms. When Kirby has this ability, he transforms into a flying saucer and can fly freely around in the air without being affected by gravity. It fires Star Bullets / Blaster Bullets with medium/max charge in the debut. The U.F.O. Blaster Bullets can destroy Metal Blocks but cannot travel through walls. Kirby cannot take this ability out of a stage, however, and will lose it once he returns to the stage hub. However, this can be circumvented using certain glitches.

In the remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the U.F.O. ability fires Heat Beams / Piercing Heat Beams instead with medium/max charge, which has been settled in later games. Despite the changes in attacks, they do the same damage in the remake.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, U.F.O. is an extremely rare ability, obtainable only by either scanning Kirby's amiibo into the game, or by completing the game 100%. Here, it has an updated moveset, and allows Kirby to drop through platforms, unlike older versions. When in a cutscene, traversing the world map or using a Warp Star, Kirby assumes his normal form, and wears a special hat that resembles the U.F.O. top.

New to Planet Robobot are the following abilities:

  • Star Guard: Creates a spark that orbits the U.F.O., like the ability scroll for the Squeak Squad version.
  • Unidentified Flight: Causes the U.F.O. to zig-zag through the air, damaging anything it touches.
  • Mystery Catch: The U.F.O. can use a tractor beam to suck up enemies from below, like an Inhale. Enemies vanish after they are sucked up.

Trivia

  • When U.F.O. Kirby uses the Cell Phone in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, a small satellite dish is used instead.
  • In Kirby: Squeak Squad, it is possible for Kirby to spit out bubbles and star projectiles while using a Copy Ability. In the case of U.F.O, his upper portion inflates when he is preparing to spit, and he inverts and starts to lose altitude, unable to move until he spits out his item.
  • While U.F.O. Kirby retains his flying saucer shape in Kirby: Planet Robobot, he temporarily assumes normal form during certain interactions, such as the cutscene after defeating the Invader Armor. Here, he has a hat which resembles the top of a U.F.O., with small electric frills on the sides.
