In the Kirby novel series, Nova appears in Kirby and the Search for the Dreamy Gears!. In this volume, Nova is never referred by name, only as the "ancient machine". A long time before the events of the story, the machine had the power to grant wishes. The people of Diamond Town wanted to eat a lot of chocolate, so the wish came true by turning all the rough diamonds into chocolate. The aristocrats of the town became very rich by selling the chocolate, and the chocolate's sweet scent spread around the town. But one day, a wizard who hated chocolate pulled the gears of the machine and sealed them away to stop the scent. He wrote a warning on it to never activate it again.

The ancient machine is found by Hugo in the diamond mines of Diamond Town. On the ancient machine, he finds a silver plate with ancient writing written on it. Magolor deciphers for him the characters on the ancient machine and reveals the warning on it. He reads to him that the machine can turn stones into priceless materials to make tremendous amounts of money, but at the cost of the town residences, since it also omits a terrible stench that will make the town miserable. Hugo, who only cares about profiting, wants to find all the gears of the ancient machine, and put a prize money for anyone who can find them. Later, Meta Knight finds a photo with the ancient warning on it and deciphers it too. Upon learning the warning, he tries to stop Hugo from activating the machine.
