Kine makes his most prominent appearances in ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'', ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', and ''[[Kirby Star Allies]]'', where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby, [[Gooey]], or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation from [[Rick]] and [[Coo]]. Kine also has a supporting role in the anime series ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'', where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and develops a crush on [[Tiff]].

== Characteristics ==
Kine bears the distinctive shape of the ocean sunfish: a wide but flat circular blue body, with large circular eyes and a gaping mouth with heavy lips on one side, triangular yellow dorsal and ventral fins, and wide but stubby limbs and tail. This bodily configuration serves him well enough in the [[Water (environment)|water]] - where he can swim with great speed - but on land, it leaves him clumsy, only able to hop about slowly. This clumsiness is particularly notable when he is paired up with Kirby and the other Animal Friends in cutscenes, where he is often the last in line, and often snubbed in favor of the typically more versatile Rick and Coo, who can sometimes be seen bullying him. Like the other Animal Friends, Kine is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Kine is particularly fond of [[apple]]s, and likes to play with them in cutscenes. He also has a tendency to latch onto Kirby using his mouth, whether Kirby wants him to or not.

Kine makes his first appearance in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]'' as one of Kirby's three [[Animal Friend]]s. He is first encountered in the second stage of [[Ripple Field (Kirby's Dream Land 2)|Ripple Field]], where [[Master Green]] is guarding him, making him the last of the three friends to be found by Kirby. Apart from appearing in a number of stages, the sunfish is also seen in four level intros: in the Ripple Field intro, he unites with Kirby after being fed an apple; in [[Iceberg (Kirby's Dream Land 2)|Iceberg]], Kirby leaves him behind in favor of [[Rick]]; in Cloudy Park, he latches onto Kirby while the latter is stuck in a cloud; and finally, in [[Dark Castle]], he apparently falls asleep as Kirby and his friends are preparing to enter the castle.

When teamed up with Kine, Kirby is contained inside the sunfish's mouth. Being a fish, the latter is at a disadvantage on land, where he moves slower than other friends and continuously makes small hops as his method of "walking". Despite this, his jumping skills are equal to those of Rick. Kine's main strengths become apparent underwater, however; while paired up with him, Kirby may inhale foes while underwater and is also capable of swimming much faster than usual by repeatedly pressing the A button while diving. This increased swimming speed lets Kirby and Kine bypass strong currents, enabling them to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible, and makes certain sections of stages easier to survive.

Like other Animal Friends, Kine will enhance any Copy Ability that Kirby possesses while the two are traveling together, turning it into a new, unique power. Unlike other abilities in the game, all of Kine's combination abilities can be used underwater to their full extent.

Kine returns in ''[[Kirby's Star Stacker (Game Boy)|Kirby's Star Stacker]]'' for [[Game Boy]], alongside the other two friends (Rick and [[Coo]]) from the previous game. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Kine blocks for a reaction to take place.

Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the sunfish is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he makes small hops while moving like in ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'', as well as in three of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Hard mode shows him and Kirby riding across the sea in pirate costumes, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.

He is first located in the third stage of [[Grass Land (Kirby's Dream Land 3)|Grass Land]] alongside Coo, once more making him one of the final friends to be found. The fish is also seen in the intro of [[Ripple Field (Kirby's Dream Land 3)|Ripple Field]], where he quarrels with [[ChuChu]] over which of the two gets to stay united with Kirby, as well as the [[Hyper Zone]] intro, where he, together with the other friends and [[King Dedede]], watches as Kirby ascends into space.

Up to and including his ability to bypass water currents, Kine acts the same in this game as he does in his debut appearance, but possesses a slightly different array of combination abilities. He is the preferred target of the blue [[Propeller]] enemy, causing it to move faster. Abandoning Kine in favor of a different friend causes him to look devastated, tears appearing in his eyes.

Kine makes a cameo in the ''[[Kirby Mass Attack]]'' sub-game [[Kirby Brawlball]], a [[wikipedia:Pinball|Pinball]] game with ''Kirby'' elements. The sunfish acts as the "stopper" between the flippers at the bottom of the main playing area, serving as a "safety net" by catching Kirby (the ball) in his mouth and spitting him out again when he would otherwise have fallen through the drain. Afterward, Kine disappears and can only be reactivated by hitting all three mole-like targets on each side of the lower area. Kine is also responsible for bringing a second Kirby into play if the slot machine stops on three Kirbys by spitting the surplus one into the playing field.

Kine also appears in the sub-game [[Kirby Quest]], where he appears alongside Rick and Coo in the "game over" screen.

Kine appears as a [[Dream Friend]] in ''[[Kirby Star Allies]]'', rolled together with [[Rick]] and [[Coo]] into a single playable character. Kine appears when swimming, and can use ice powers in the water, though doing this for too long will freeze him. Kine is a much faster swimmer than the other characters, though, on land, he can only flop around. When flopping around on land, he can provide the [[Splash]] [[Power Effect]] and put out fires. When underwater, he can use his "Ice Kine" power to supply the Blizzard effect, though being able to position properly to grant it to allies can be tricky.

Kine also appears in two of the [[Celebration Picture]]s, namely "A Dream Above the Clouds" and "Crazy Mischief in the Stars".

Lastly, Kine appears alongside Rick and Coo in one of Kirby or [[Rocky]]'s Stone transformations, contained inside a [[Protective Bag]]. This particular form is always the result when [[Rock Painter]] is used on Rick & Kine & Coo.

Kine is a recurring character in the anime ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]''. He is shown to have a crush on [[Tiff]], one of [[Kirby (anime character)|Kirby]]'s friends, with the episode [[A Fish Called Kine]] particularly focusing on this. Kine is portrayed as being somewhat dim-witted and stubborn, but also loving and determined. Unlike in the games, Kine has very little to do with Kirby directly, and is unable to survive for long on land, as would be expected for a fish. He is also somewhat smaller than he is in the games.

In the English dub of "[[A Fish Called Kine]]", Kine is mistakenly called a blue surgeon fish, when he is referred to as an ocean sunfish in Japanese. This was corrected in "[[The Kirby Quiz]]", where he is referred to as an ocean sunfish in both languages.

In the [[Kirby (novel series)|''Kirby'' novel series]], Kine appears as a deuteragonist in ''[[Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!]]'' together with [[Rick]] and [[Coo]]. He is a resident of the [[Rainbow Islands]] and one of [[Kirby (novel character)|Kirby]]'s [[Animal Friend]]s.

In ''[[Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!]]'', he comes to [[Dream Land]] with Rick and Coo to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. Kine tells that even when it stopped raining in the Rainbow Islands, he and [[Mine]] didn't struggle as much as other fish due to being trained to live on land. In their search, the group finds [[Pirika]], who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. Kine sets off to the lake in the cloud with the rest.

When they reach the lake, Kine prepares to jump into it, but [[Gooey]] stops him, starting a fight. After they flee from the battlefield, the group decides to investigate the lake by sending Kine into it, since he is the most fit for underwater combat. Kine cowers, so Pirika suggests that he will hold Kirby in his mouth so they both could fight, which he agrees to. Kine and Kirby prepare to jump into the lake, but Gooey tosses them onto the tree, making them fall unconscious, and another fight ensues. After Coo wakes Kine and Rick up, the three fight against their controlled friends. After Kirby falls unconscious, Kine sprays water to wake him too.

As they catch a break, Kine and the others listen to Gooey telling his side of the story. Kine notices movement in the [[Protective Bag|pouch]], and [[King Dedede (novel character)|King Dedede]] and [[Meta Knight (novel character)|Meta Knight]] break out, continuing the fight. It is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. Kine and Rick run over to Kirby, who is in great pain. Despite their worries, Kirby shortly wakes up. After the rain returns, Kine swims happily in the purified water of the lake. He returns to the land and meets Mine once again.
