King Dedede (King DeDeDe in some older games; sometimes shortened to Dedede) is a hammer-wielding portly blue creature with penguin-like qualities, who proclaims himself king of Dream Land. He is a recurring villain and/or ally, is usually confronted in a boss fight, and serves as Kirby's "arch frenemy". Though he often engages in trouble-making, mostly involving stealing other people's food, he has also done some noble acts, such as trying to seal away Nightmare, helping Kirby battle Queen Sectonia, and accompanying Kirby in a few of his adventures. King Dedede lives in a castle atop Mt. Dedede with a retinue of Waddle Dees acting as his servants. Having first debuted in Kirby's Dream Land along with the game's namesake, King Dedede is arguably the second-most well-recognized character from the Kirby series. He is often portrayed as a comic foil in addition to his role as a villain, which makes him comparable to Bowser from the Mario franchise. King Dedede has appeared in one form or another in nearly every game in the series, and has even had a whole spin-off game devoted to him. In older games, he was seldom playable, but this changed in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards; with the king being playable in most of his subsequent appearances. |
