In order to obtain a Crystal Shard, a Star Block puzzle must be completed in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

The Star Block is one of the most common objects in the Kirby franchise, appearing in every Kirby title thus far, and most often as an orange square with a white star at its center. Like in the Super Mario Bros. series, these blocks, when broken open, sometimes reveal small surprises, ranging from absolutely nothing to small Stars than can be collected in large quantities to receive a 1-Up. In that same vein, these blocks have been seen floating mid-air, and on the ground, yet in either location they can be destroyed in the same fashion. Not only can Kirby break these blocks by conventional means or by use of a copy ability, these are perfect fire power as he can also suck them up and fire them at enemies as projectiles. These blocks, regardless of game, are never present during boss fights, although they are quite the common sight within regular, non-boss stages.

Other Appearances

Star Blocks also appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl within the Green Greens stage. These blocks fall in random increments as the current Star Blocks in the five by three columns on both sides of the stage are destroyed. Also showering down are Bomb Blocks, which look similar to regular Star Blocks but have a tanish-yellow fill and a bomb instead of a star. These blocks explode if hit with an attack or are given the time to sit until they discharge.
