Story Mode: The Destined Rivals is a game mode for one or two players in Kirby Fighters 2 which pits Kirby and a buddy of his choosing against King Dedede and Meta Knight, who have teamed up into a duo and headed to the Summit of the Buddy Fighters Tower in order to finally defeat Kirby in combat. The game mode consists of five levels (referred to as Chapters) inter-cut with narration as Kirby and his buddy make their way up the tower past numerous foes. As they ascend and defeat their opponents, the player has an opportunity to select Story Items to power the team up in various ways or heal them. In addition to regular opponents, Kirby and his buddy also battle bosses in a similar manner to traditional Kirby boss fights.
