'''Gooey''' is one of [[Kirby]]'s friends who appears primarily in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', though he was first introduced in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]''. While he does not have any additional limbs, he can use his tongue to grab onto things, and stretch parts of his "body" to use as makeshift limbs when necessary. Despite being even more simplistic-looking than Kirby, Gooey has a very distinct personality which is portrayed through his expressions and actions. His body is little more than a loose deep-blue blob, which he shifts in a sort of gallop in order to bound around quite quickly, matching Kirby's pace. His eyes are wide and round with small pupils, and continuously spin asynchronously to each-other, suggesting that Gooey is constantly dizzy or disoriented. His mouth is typically a wide closed smile, though he frequently opens up to lasso some food or an enemy with his long [[Whip]]-like tongue. Much like Kirby, Gooey is capable of spitting out his foes as [[Star Bullet]]s, swallowing them to [[Copy Ability|gain their powers]], and [[hover]]ing through the air. He can also pair up with [[Animal Friend]]s in the same way as Kirby. In addition, Gooey can take flight using his "Mock Matter" form, where he more greatly resembles [[Dark Matter]], and can even fire Dark Lasers.

Gooey can generally be described as naïve and child-like; even more so than Kirby. [[Cutscene]]s in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'' suggest he has an insatiable appetite with little self-control, and is overly curious with his tongue, to the point where he once gets on [[ChuChu]]'s nerves. Gooey can also be generally described as having a somewhat detached attitude from the world around him, as he is not typically phased by things that happen to him, and is not really inclined to understand much of anything about himself or his world, mainly acting on instinct. In ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', Gooey can be called by pressing the "A" button in exchange for a full unit of Kirby's health and is playable by a second player or the [[CPU]], possessing four bars of health separate from Kirby's. Gooey can grab enemies with his long tongue, spit them out as a [[Star Bullet]] or swallow them to potentially gain a Copy Ability. He can also do this [[Water (environment)|underwater]], allowing him to attack without using the [[Water Gun]]. The only trade-off is that he cannot eat more than one enemy at a time. Gooey can also [[hover]] and [[slide]] or use an [[Air Bullet]] to attack enemies like Kirby. Kirby can inhale and swallow Gooey anytime to restore a full unit of health, which will also give Kirby any [[Copy Ability]] that Gooey may have had. Doing so removes him from the game until he is called again. In the [[Kirby (novel series)|''Kirby'' novel series]], Gooey appears as a tritagonist in ''[[Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!]]''. He is one [[Kirby (novel character)|Kirby]]'s friends.

Before the events of the story, Gooey sees [[Pirika]] flying near the clouds and follows her in hopes of playing together. He sees her planting the [[Dreamstalk]] by the lake, but when he offers to help, Pirika throws its fruit at him which gets stuck in his throat, making him not able to speak. Sensing that the water of the lake got corrupted by the tree, Gooey realizes that if it pours down in the form of rain, it will affect the residents of the [[Rainbow Islands]], so he piles up rocks to block the water. When Pirika tries to break the stones, Gooey fights her.

When Pirika tells Kirby and his friends about their meeting, she lies and claims that she is the one that followed Gooey and makes Gooey seem like the culprit behind the drought, but she doesn't know that Kirby is friends with Gooey. She convinces everyone to help her fight against it. When Kirby realizes that the supposed culprit is Gooey, he dismisses Pirika's story as a misunderstanding. Gooey notices that Pirika tries to push Kirby into the lake, so he attacks her, making him seem like culprit. The others prepare to attack back, but Kirby doesn't want to fight his friend and flees from the battlefield. When Kirby and [[Kine]] try to jump into the lake, Gooey comes from the water and throws them away, starting another battle. Gooey fights [[Meta Knight (novel character)|Meta Knight]] and [[King Dedede (novel character)|King Dedede]]. He tosses [[Rick]] too when he tries to jump in. To stop Gooey, Kirby uses his [[inhale]], which releases the fruit from his throat, making him able to speak and explain why he attacked.

After learning that Pirika is the culprit, Gooey and Kirby fight the puppeted Meta Knight and Dedede. Gooey wraps his tongue around Kirby and flings him at King Dedede, which take both of the puppets out, but also Kirby. Gooey captures Pirika and stuffs her in the [[Protective Bag|pouch]]. As they catch a break, Gooey tells his side of the story, and Rick gratefully hugs him. When Pirika escapes from the bag, Gooey chases her in his Mock Matter form, but stops when noticing Kirby in a pinch. Gooey captures her again after Kirby sucks up all the lake water. After the rain returns, King Dedede picks a fight with Gooey, who want to squeeze in the boat too to return to the land, although he can fly. He returns to the land with them to enjoy the rain.

==Trivia==
*A tip in the ''Kirby's Dream Land 3'' manual claims that calling Gooey would cut Kirby's vitality in half,<ref>{{cite manual|game=Kirby's Dream Land 3|page=33|quote=Don't forget that Kirby's vitality is cut in half every time you call Gooey.}}</ref> while in reality, it only removes a unit from his health meter. This appears to be a mistake, as an earlier section of the manual correctly states that Kirby's health is only slightly reduced.
**It is not possible for Kirby's vitality to drop below half a bar when he calls Gooey, so a trick to save Kirby from the brink is to summon Gooey, then swallow him up to get a bar of health back.
*Gooey is the only Dream Friend in ''Kirby Star Allies'' that represents a game other than the one they debuted in. While first appearing in ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'' (albeit as a minor character), Gooey represents ''Kirby's Dream Land 3'' instead, with [[Rick & Kine & Coo]] representing the former.
