Black Hole is a reoccurring attack used by Marx and other Soul-form bosses throughout the Kirby series, with some variations being made along the way.

Function

This attack causes a large black hole to appear, usually near the center of the screen, which sucks up Kirby unless he is perpetually running away from it. If Kirby is sucked into the black hole, he will be transported to an alternate dimension where he will take a large amount of damage before being returned to the original stage. Kirby will also lose his Copy Ability upon entering a black hole.

Kirby Super Star

Black Hole first appears in Kirby Super Star as one of Marx’s attacks. With it, Marx momentarily splits himself in two, creating a black hole between his two halves which exists only for a few seconds. This attack, which is prefaced by Marx teleporting erratically around the stage, cannot be guarded against.

Kirby Super Star Ultra

Kirby Super Star Ultra reprises Black Hole in the boss fights against both Marx and Marx Soul.

Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, Marx appears as the final boss of the Sub-Game Kirby Brawlball. Here, he uses Black Hole to split himself in half and suck up enemies from off-screen as well as any Kirbys that come too close. After a few seconds, Marx will then spit out a flurry of enemies and Kirbys. Thought the enemies cannot make contact with the Kirbys, the way they crowd the screen makes it difficult for the player to focus on the Kirbys.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land

Magolor Soul using Super Black Hole

A variation of the Black Hole attack is used by Magolor Soul in Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, this time called Super Black Hole. Magolor Soul will only use Super Black Hole if Kirby has the Ultra Sword. The attack causes a black hole to appear which warps the background and threatens to suck Kirby in.

Kirby Triple Deluxe

Marx Soul’s keychain from Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Marx Soul’s Black Hole attack from Kirby Super Star Ultra is shown in Kirby: Triple Deluxe as a keychain. Here, he is pictured splitting himself in two, which happens immediately before a black hole spawns.

Kirby Star Allies

In Kirby Star Allies — the only title to include Marx as a playable character — Black Hole can be used by a player. This is done by pressing, holding and releasing B while using Marx’s Radiant Flight move. This move causes Marx to split in half and summon a black hole which sucks up any enemies within a short radius.

Super Kirby Clash

Super Kirby Clash features a sticker of Marx Soul performing the Black Hole attack, which looks almost identical to his keychain from Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Chaos Elfilis performing And Here We Are

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Black Hole makes its first appearance in 3-D as Chaos Elfilis’ first Phase 2 attack. Here, the attack is named And Here We Are after the voice clip that plays before its use. During this attack, Chaos Elfilis will turn into a black hole, shrouding the stage in darkness and pulling Kirby inward. As always, Kirby must run away from the black hole so as not to be transported to a harmful alternate dimension. Though Kirby will lose his Copy Ability if he is sucked in to the vortex, he is able to recover it when the attack ends.

Marx using Black Hole in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Marx appears again as a boss Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where Black Hole serves its normal function. In this title, Marx will teleport three times until he is located in the middle of the stage, then quickly open a black hole which Kirby must run away from.
