This article is about the Waddle Dee that appears in The Arena. For the regular ol' Waddle Dee, see this page (wait, that's not the right one).
No telling if it's true, but according to the ancient scrolls, Arena Waddle Dee may reappear in other games depending on whether HAL Laboratory gives him more lore.. It seems this being of waddle will wander The Arena until one day he is brought back in a new game. When he returns, hopefully it will be…official.
— Arena Waddle Dee pause screen text

Arena Waddle Dee[conjectural title][Jambandra title][derived from New Worldian][from internal data][citation needed][needs verification][1], also referred to as ENEMY, BOSS, or simply Waddle Dee, is, unsurprisingly, a Waddle Dee. He first appeared in Kirby Super Star, where he is used as a joke boss in The Arena, being completely motionless but having the most health out of any Waddle Dee. Later on, he would reappear in the Boss Endurance mode of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, as well as the remake of Kirby Super Star; Kirby Super Star Ultra, always serving largely the same role in each game. Or at least, that's what people want you to think. In reality, he is secretly one of the most important characters in the Kirby series, making appearances in almost every game.

Physical appearance

KSS Waddle Dee.png
Arena Waddle Dee's sprite in Kirby Super Star, which is totally different from a regular Waddle Dee.

Arena Waddle Dee does not look like your typical Waddle Dee. Well, actually, he does, but that doesn't mean he's not special.[2] Just like most other Waddle Dees, he has a light orange skin with black eyes, and weird stubs instead of actual limbs. In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Arena Waddle Dee gained a minor redesign, making him look identical to every other Waddle Dee in that game. Actually, the redesign happened in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, but he didn't officially appear in that game. Arena Waddle Dee once again got redesigned in Kirby Super Star Ultra, obtaining a very fabulous blue bandana, which he also wears in Revenge of the King. Just ignore the fact that this main game takes place after Spring Breeze, which is a retelling of Kirby's Dream Land, meaning that he somehow lost the bandana before the events of every other game. His lore is already confusing enough. Arena Waddle Dee's only movement consists of standing, walking, and jumping. This may not seem very impressive, but you will definitely be impressed with what else he can do in his unofficial appearances, unless you're already bored and want to read another page instead.

Personality

Arena Waddle Dee doesn't have much personality, but since he tries to fight Kirby in The Arena, it's safe to assume that he's a very courageous Waddle Dee. This is further proven upon in Kirby Super Star Ultra, as well as all of his following appearances, but mentioning that here would spoil the rest of this supercalifragilistic page. Anyhow, Arena Waddle Dee can also be described as very silly, foolish, or maybe even a nincompoop. This is mainly due to the fact that he is used as a joke in every official appearance, being the weakest enemy in every Boss Endurance mode he appears in. But we will always love him no matter what, and one day, he might clobbah dat dere Kirbeh.

Moveset

Due to being a boss in so many Kirby games, Arena Waddle Dee has a large number of signature attacks which he uses in most of his fights. That sentence definitely wasn't copied from another page, just like the following table, which lists all of Arena Waddle Dee's most notable attacks in the order they first appeared in:

Arena Waddle Dee's moveset
Name First game used Description Notes
Nothing Kirby Super Star Arena Waddle Dee does literally nothing. He's just standing there… MENACINGLY! It's not very menacing.
Walk Kirby & The Amazing Mirror Arena Waddle Dee walks forward (left, towards Kirby's start point). Once he reaches the end of the screen, he starts walking the other way (right, towards not Kirby's start point). He walks slightly faster than a regular Waddle Dee. I think. I'm not so sure, actually.
Jump Kirby Super Star Ultra Arena Waddle Dee jumps forward in the same direction he's walking in. This attack might be a reference to Mario Mario from Mario, since he also jumps.[3] Mario even used to be called Jumpman, what a funny name!
Shooter Cutter Kirby Fighters 2 Arena Waddle Dee shoots out four boomerangs, which don't grant the Cutter ability, since that's not how Copy Abilities work in this game.
This attack is an overused reference to the boss fight with Marx in Kirby Super Star.

Game appearances

Arena Waddle Dee's appearances, with appearances in bold being the only ones that matter
Game Role Notes
Kirby series
Kirby's Dream Land Enemy (somewhere, probably) This is the first appearance of Waddle Dees in general. One of these just has to be Arena Waddle Dee, right?
Kirby's Adventure Enemy This is the first game to have a Boss Endurance, as well as a literal Arena, yet Arena Waddle Dee is fought in neither.
Kirby's Pinball Land Enemy exclusive to Wispy-Woods Land This is the first game to only feature one Waddle Dee. This undoubtedly means that this Waddle Dee is Arena Waddle Dee.
Kirby's Dream Course Enemy Why do Waddle Dees have green feet in this game?
Kirby's Avalanche First opponent This is the second game to only feature one Waddle Dee.
Kirby's Dream Land 2 Enemy Waddle Dees can be unnecessarily fast in this game.
Kirby's Block Ball Enemy Waddle Dees can be both blocks and balls.
Kirby's Toy Box Existing, giving 100 points to Kirby This is the third game to only have one Waddle Dee.
Kirby Super Star First official appearance as a boss Well, as official as you can get.
Kirby's Star Stacker (Game Boy) Playable character This is the first game where a regular Waddle Dee is playable.
Kirby's Dream Land 3 Enemy This is the first game where a Waddle Dee HOG RIDER.
Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom) First opponent (again) This is the fourth game to only have one Waddle Dee.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Supporting protagonist, boss, and playable character in Sub-Games This is the fifth game to only have one Waddle Dee, and the third time a Waddle Dee is playable.
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble Enemy This is the first game that doesn't have a clever note in this wiki table.
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land Enemy This is surprisingly not the last time Kirby's Adventure has been remade.
Kirby Air Ride Enemy This is the last Kirby game according to Masahiro Sakurai.
Kirby Slide None Since this game does not include characters, it is impossible for Arena Waddle Dee to make an appearance. Despite this, the game is still in the list of his appearances, since including every game is funny.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror Second official appearance as a boss (or mid-boss?) Arena Waddle Dee is 8 pixels smaller compared to his appearance in Kirby Super Star.
Kirby: Canvas Curse Enemy and playable character You can play as a Waddle Dee while also attacking them, which is kind of weird.
Kirby: Squeak Squad Enemy and playable character, perchance Kirby can use the Ghost ability to control a Waddle Dee. This may hint at the fact that Waddle Dees have souls, possibly being a reference to a certain soul boss.
Kirby Super Star Ultra First true appearance as a boss, but again Arena Waddle Dee gains a blue bandana in this game, which is a reference to Blue Bandanna Waddle Dee.
Kirby's Epic Yarn Possibly The Yarn Waddle Dees aren't real Waddle Dees, so maybe Arena Waddle Dee doesn't appear.
Kirby Mass Attack Cameo in Strato Patrol EOS Appears during the boss fight against Meta Knight.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Playable character This is the first time Arena Waddle Dee is actually useful.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Various Arena Waddle Dee appears so many times in this game, because it has multiple games in it.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe Supporting character Despite the return of The Arena, Arena Waddle Dee does not return in the mode.
Kirby Fighters Deluxe Why are you reading this? He doesn't even have a role!
Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe Reference King Dedede can wear a Waddle Dee mask, which happens to look exceptionally similar to Arena Waddle Dee. That can't be a coincidence.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Playable characters They're multiplying.
Kirby: Planet Robobot Supporting character Despite the return of The Arena, Arena Waddle Dee does not return in the mode. Again.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe Supporting character This game actually takes place in an alternate dimension, meaning that it has different versions of most characters.
Kirby's Blowout Blast Enemy Since this is a retelling of Kirby's Dream Land, Arena Waddle Dee might be hidden among the regular enemy Waddle Dees. But that's just a theory. A Kirby theory.
Kirby Battle Royale Supporting protagonist For unknown reasons, Bandana Waddle Dee is not playable.
Kirby Star Allies Playable character They're multiplying again.
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn Less possibly This game is not extra epic.
Super Kirby Clash Supporting character This game once again takes place in an alternate dimension with different versions of most characters.
Kirby Fighters 2 Playable character Arena Waddle Dee was added as a playable character in version 3.0.0, despite Bandana Waddle Dee already being in playable.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land Supporting protagonist and playable character If you ever want a second player to join you, just let him know. He'll always be ready!
Kirby's Dream Buffet Reference Kirby can impersonate Arena Waddle Dee in this game.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe Playable character Reprises his usefulness from Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
Super Smash Bros. series
Super Smash Bros. None There is not a single Waddle Dee in the first game.
Super Smash Bros. Melee Trophy Erm, actually, the Super Smash Bros. universe is just a child playing with toys, so these shouldn't count as official appearances.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl Various Luigi knows the true potential of a Waddle Dee.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U Enemy Run.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirits The Waddle Dee spirit can be enhanced to Bandana Waddle Dee.

Kirby's Dream Land

KDL Waddle Dee sprite.png Waddle Dees make their debut appearance in Kirby's Dream Land, the first game in the Kirby series. Unfortunately, not a single Waddle Dee in this game has a distinct identity. This means that Arena Waddle Dee also does not officially appear in this game. However, since Kirby travels throughout a large portion of Dream Land in this game, it's safe to assume that at least one of the Waddle Dees he came across might have been Arena Waddle Dee. Additionally, in this game's Extra Game, certain Waddle Dees can be seen jumping, which Arena Waddle Dee is also seen doing in future appearances. Sadly, Extra Game is probably not canon.

A Waddle Dee-less Arena in Kirby's Adventure and its remake.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Arenas make their debut appearance in Kirby's Adventure, the second game in the Kirby series. However, the Arenas in this game are different from The Arena in future games. In Kirby's Adventure, instead of fighting multiple bosses and mid-bosses in a row in one single mode, he instead fights one mid-boss at a time in multiple smaller arenas. Unfortunately, none of the arenas let Kirby fight Arena Waddle Dee. This game also features the very first Boss Endurance of the series, but since Kirby doesn't even fight mid-boss in this mode, Arena Waddle Dee does not appear. Luckily, since this game is a lot longer than Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby might have coincidentally come across Arena Waddle Dee again.

Arena Waddle Dee can not be found in the following levels and stages:

Kirby's Pinball Land

In Kirby's Pinball Land, only a single Waddle Dee appears, being exclusive to Wispy-Woods Land. By process of elimination, this has to be Arena Waddle Dee. Huh? What do you mean "That's not how it works"?

Kirby's Dream Course

For unknown reasons, every Waddle Dee in Kirby's Dream Course has green feet. Since Arena Waddle Dee does not have green feet, it is likely that he does not appear in this game. This game is still listed on this page because it's funny.

Kirby's Avalanche

Umm, can't we just walk together? The forest scares me...
— Waddle Dee's first words

Kirby's Avalanche once again only has a single Waddle Dee, being the first opponent in the game. Unfortunately, process of elimination does not work with only a single subject. Although, this is one of the few Waddle Dees that has ever been seen speaking, one of the others being Arena Waddle Dee. Therefore, there is a likely chance that this is also Arena Waddle Dee.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

As the name implies, Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a direct sequel to Kirby's Dream Land, meaning that it does not have Arena Waddle Dee (or Arena Waddle Dee 2: Electric Boogaloo). However, this game marks the return of Waddle Dees that can jump, this time actually appearing in the main story mode of the game.

Kirby's Block Ball

KBBa Waddle Dee sprite.png Waddle Dees appear as common enemies in Kirby's Block Ball. They are worth 300 points when bumped into and defeated and will drop food.

Kirby's Toy Box

Once again, only a single Waddle Dee appears in Kirby's Toy Box, being exclusive to the Pinball mini-game. Instead of being Arena Waddle Dee, this might be the same Waddle Dee from Kirby's Pinball Land, who shall be nicknamed Pinball Waddle Dee.

Kirby Super Star

Alas, Arena Waddle Dee finally makes his first real appearance in Kirby Super Star. In this game, Arena Waddle Dee appears exclusively in the final mode of the game; The Arena, where he is randomly chosen as one of the first 18 fights before the final boss. He is fought in the same colosseum as both of the Mid-Boss All Stars, which also appears in the background of the victory screen after Kirby beats The Arena. Arena Waddle Dee's behaviour in this game is very simple. In fact, it's non-existent, as he simply stands still and can only be moved from being attacked by Kirby. Arena Waddle Dee has a relatively high amount of health for a Waddle Dee, but can be easily defeated with a simple inhale.[4] Despite actually being called Arena Waddle Dee[conjectural title][Jambandra title][derived from New Worldian][from internal data][citation needed][needs verification][1], he is only referred to as ENEMY in this game's UI, just like most other bosses in Kirby Super Star.

Information on Arena Waddle Dee's role in Kirby Super Star Ultra will be covered here, since it makes the most sense chronologically.

WINNER!!
LOSER!!
This Waddle Dee is very emotional depending on the results of his match against Kirby.

Kirby's Star Stacker

In Kirby's Star Stacker on the Game Boy, player 2 controls a Waddle Dee in the Vs. Mode. This is the second time we see a Waddle Dee directly challenging Kirby, which may be a hint that this is Arena Waddle Dee, especially considering that this is the first game to release after his first appearance in Kirby Super Star.

In the Japanese-exclusive Kirby's Star Stacker on the Super Famicom, a Waddle Dee serves as the first opponent in the game's Story Mode, similar to his role in Kirby's Avalanche. If this Waddle Dee is the same one as that game, it might mean that this one is also Arena Waddle Dee.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

As the name implies, Kirby's Dream Land 3 does not feature Arena Waddle Dee 1, 2 or 3. However, Waddle Dees can be seen riding Nruffs and rafts in this game, which is pretty neat but completely irrelevant.

"He's right behind me, isn't he?"

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Main article: Waddle Dee (Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards)

Just like a couple of the previous games, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards only has a single Waddle Dee, known as Waddle Dee. But this Waddle Dee is special, since he's one of the main characters in the game. He is first seen in Pop Star - Stage 1, where he gets possessed by Dark Matter and turns into a Waddle Doo. Ignoring the weird lore implications, Kirby beats him up and Waddle Dee joins him on his journey. Since this is such a cool Waddle Dee, he might actually be Arena Waddle Dee, who is also very cool. A common theory in the Kirby community suggests that Waddle Dee (the one from this game) is actually Bandana Waddle Dee, which will become very important later on in this page.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

The manual of Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble confirms that Waddle Dees are little guys.[5]

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble 2

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble 2 does not confirm anything, since the game never released.

The original Windmill Tree in all its glory.

Kirby Air Ride

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Waddle Dees appear as regular enemies in Kirby Air Ride. The character in this game people should be talking about is Windmill Tree, who debuted in this game's Fantasy Meadows course. Ever since this game, Windmill Tree has made appearances in almost every game in the series, whether it be a small cameo or a major background element. However, not every Windmill Tree is confirmed to be the same one, since while the original has insect-like leaves, it most often appears with more natural looking green leaves.

Arena Waddle Dee, moments after being hit in the face by Hammer Kirby.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

Arena Waddle Dee finally makes his triumphant return in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. Just like every other main-series game since Kirby's Adventure, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror has its very own Boss Endurance mode. Despite just being called Boss Endurance, this mode is more similar to The Arena, since it lets Kirby choose any of his Copy Abilities, as well as giving him Maxim Tomatoes in rest areas. This similarity might be the reason for Arena Waddle Dee's long-awaited return. Furthermore, every battle is also fought in a random order (except for the last two bosses), but unlike in The Arena, Arena Waddle Dee does not have his own battle. Instead, he is fought in one of the three mid-boss battles, being the first foe before Kirby battles Bombar and Box Boxer. Kirby also has the ability to call his friends in this game, but luckily for Arena Waddle Dee, the CPUs are so stupid that they're just going to get hit and lose their Copy Abilities. Arena Waddle Dee is once again fought in a colosseum, but the audience is a lot closer and easier to see in this game, which now consists Cappies, Scarfies, Waddle Doos, and even other Waddle Dees.

Music

The composer of "Arena Showdown", Jun Ishikawa, was confused when told that Arena Waddle Dee needed his own theme music.[6]
Main article: Arena Showdown

Arena Waddle Dee has his very own theme music, which is known as "Arena Showdown". Just like all other music in the Kirby series, it is actually a remix of the "Green Greens" theme. This is due to the fact that its composer, Jun Ishikawa, can only see the color green.
