The game also introduces the series' main protogonist, Kirby, and antagonist, King Dedede. Kirby's Dream Land is the series' most successful installment, having sold over 5 million copies worldwide since 1992.

Story

Kirby's Dream Land takes place in Dream Land, where all the people are happy. Then, one day, a band of thieves, led by King Dedede, swoops down from Mt. Dedede and steals all the food. Kirby then gears up and heads to Mt. Dedede to retrieve the food and save Dream Land.

Kirby then travels through five areas of Dream Land to reach King Dedede and battle him.

Green Greens

Kirby's first location in Dream Land is the Green Greens. Kirby travels along the level, defeating many enemies along the way until he reaches a Warp Star which will take him to the Mid-boss, Poppy Bros. Sr. who wants to turn Kirby into a roasted marshmallow by bombarding him with bombs. After defeating Poppy Bros. Sr., Kirby will have to continue traveling through the level to reach the level's Boss, Whispy Woods. After defeating Whispy Woods, Kirby travles to the next area.

Castle Lololo

Castle Lololo is the second location in Dream Land that Kirby visits. Kirby travels through the castle, going through several paths until he comes to a room which has the Mid-boss. The mid-boss is Lololo (without Lalala) and he shoves Emerald Framers at Kirby. After Kirby spits the framers back at him three times, he will retreat further into the castle, allowing Kirby to continue. In the next area, Kirby once again travels along, defeating enemies, until he gets to the final boss. There are two final bosses in this stage, Lololo & Lalala. They will both follow the same attack pattern as Lololo did in his first battle. After defeating them, Kirby moves on to the next area.

Float Islands

The Float Islands are the next area of Dream Land that Kirby visits. He must travel through the islands, defeating all the Kabus and making it to the boss of the area, Kaboola. After defeating Kaboola, Kirby heads to the fourth area and his penultimate challenge.

Bubbly Clouds

The Bubbly Clouds are the second-last area of Dream Land that Kirby visits. He travles through the clouds, battling all the enemies until he reaches the mid-boss, Kracko Jr.. Kracko Jr. flies around, shooting at Kirby and dropping Waddle Dees for the entire battle. Eventually, Kirby defeats him and continues along until he reachers the boss battle. Kracko Jr.'s father, Kracko, serves as the boss of this stage and he follows mostly the same strategy as his sun but a little more intense. After defeating Kracko, Kirby goes to the final area.

Mt. Dedede

Mt. Dedede is the final area of Dream Land that kirby visits. To get to King Dedede, Kirby must pass open up the path by going through four doors. Each door leads to one of the previous four areas of Dream Land, where Kirby has to do a level and defeat the final bosses of the areas again. Once all that is done, Kirby can go through a portrait of Dedede and go to the final battle. After Kirby defeats Kind Dedede, he will return the food to the people of Dream Land and the credits will roll.

Gameplay

Like most Kirby games, Kirby's Dream Land is played in a 2D platform. The player who controls Kirby must successfully pass each level and avoid attacks from enemies before losing all possible health points. Kirby can run, fly, and puff out air to destroy any nearby opponents. Kirby can also inhale enemies and objects. Once Kirby inhales an opponent or object, Kirby can either spit them back out as as a star projectile and destroy the object or opponent that hits it, or Kirby can swallow it. However, when swallowing an opponent, Kirby does not gain any new ability, as his trademark Copy Abilities do not debut until Kirby's Adventure.

Along the way various items will appear on the road to assist Kirby. These items enchance Kirby's attacks, allowing Kirby to destroy enemies. In some cases, these items must be used to defeat a boss.

  • Microphone - The Microphone is an item that Kirby can inhale, and spit out to defeat opponents. However, when a microphone has been spit out, its projectile will devaste and destroy any opponents it encounters before leaving the screen. The same concept is used for the Mike.
  • Bomb - Once Kirby inhales it, Kirby can spit it out to devastate multiple enemies it encounters before leaving the screen. This same concept is used for other abilities in the series like Bomb and Crash abilities.
  • Super Spicy Curry - Inhale it, and Kirby will continually spit fire and burn anything on sight, but only for a little while. This same concept is used for future fire based powers like Fire.
  • Mint Leaf - This item allows Kirby to stay permanently puffed up, and shoot multiple gasps of air continually, until the power runs out. This item is mainly used when battling Kaboola.
  • Invincibility Candy - This allows Kirby to become invincible for a short time. With it, Kirby can destroy any enemy he runs into. This is the only item to reappear in future games.

Other Modes

Kirby's Dream Land features other game modes that are more challenging, or can be made as challenging or easy as the player wants.

Configuration Mode

If the player holds the buttons B + Down + Select on the title screen, they can enter a menu where they can change Kirby's Total HP (between one and six) or amount of lives they can carry. (between one and nine). This can mean, when set the right way, one hit could result in an instant Game Over.

Extra Mode

Extra Mode is where all the enemies are more challenging. For example, Waddle Dees move faster, and can jump. Also, normal enemies usually deal double damage. Some older enemies have been replaced with newer, more aggressive enemies. To enter, press Up, Select and A at the title screen.

Spring Breeze

Main article: Spring Breeze

In Kirby Super Star (and Ultra), one of the Sub-Games that the player can play is named Spring Breeze, which is a remake of Kirby's Dream Land with some differences. Some include:

  • Obtain Copy Abilities and make Helpers.
  • Items that give Kirby powers are gone.
  • Kaboola is not found. (However, in Revenge of the King in Ultra, a more challenging version of Spring Breeze, Kirby does fight Kaboola, now Kabula.)
  • Castle Lololo is not in the remake, Lololo and Lalala are in Float Islands, and, as mentioned above, Kaboola does not appear at all.
