"The Cave in the Sky"[2] is a theme from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. It plays in Fine Fields - Stage 2 and Old Odyssey - Stage 3 and is associated with the verdant caves that said stages feature. It was composed by Hirokazu Ando.[1]

Composition[edit]

Kirby explores the cave in the sky.

"The Cave in the Sky" is a lively dissonant piece in 4/4. It is built around augmented harmonies and juxtapositions between distant keys. Its melody is somewhat reminiscent of "Courses 1 & 3 theme" in its pattern of descending and rising sixths. Starting with many sharp accidentals, the first phrase ends in F major, while the second phrase counters it by switching from flats to F-sharp major. The two phrases play again and end in a longer resolution. This repeats with different instruments, ending in G major. The following section is less dissonant, focusing on minor harmonies of major flat keys. The theme at the core of this section is a variation of the third part of "Floral Fields". It then stays in F-sharp major for some time before returning to the dissonant first section.

Other appearances[edit]

The unused song from Kirby's Dream Land 2 that bears a strong resemblance to "The Cave in the Sky".

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, a track that sounds very similar to "The Cave in the Sky" is unused in the game, instead appearing exclusively in the Sound Test. Rather than being under BGM, it is found among sound effects in FGM.

According to Hirokazu Ando, he included this song in the Sound Test despite it being unused because he personally liked the song. He later received a postcard about the song, which made him happy.[3]
