The Battle of Blizzard Bridge The Wastes Where Life Began
 This box: view  talk  edit

An Unexpected Beast King is the fifth and final main stage of Winter Horns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. This stage is unlocked after completing The Battle of Blizzard Bridge and requires Kirby to have saved at least 23 Waddle Dees in Winter Horns to enter. In this stage, Kirby does battle with King Dedede, who is sporting a new look after having joined the Beast Pack, in order to free the Waddle Dees he has caged up.

There are no Capsules to collect in this stage, but there are five missions to complete. There are a total of seven Waddle Dees to rescue here. The blueprint for Homing Bomb can be found here.

Stage overview[edit]

Kirby faces down against a more beastly-looking King Dedede and his Primal Awoofies.

The stage begins with a long flight of stairs up a precarious cliffside leading past a Maxim Tomato, and then past an area where the Copy Essences for Cutter, Drill, Fire, and Ice can be utilized. From here, past two Awoofies on guard, Kirby heads up one more set of stairs to a big decrepit cathedral. Once inside the door, he sees someone with a familiar shape ordering one of the caged Waddle Dees taken away. The figure turns dramatically, flanked by two Primal Awoofies, and reveals himself to be King Dedede, wearing war paint and a new leopard-skin coat.

Main article: King Dedede

The battle with King Dedede starts with the usual set of moves, including hammer attacks, Head Slide, and Super Dedede Jump. However, King Dedede now has his spinning jump from Kirby's Dream Land 3, and all of his jumps create big shockwaves on landing. When Dedede is knocked to half health, he drops his hammer and picks up a big pillar to attack Kirby with instead. Using this pillar, he can cause giant icy fissures in the ground to flare up, and his reach becomes much more impressive. Still, each swing with the pillar creates lots of Dropped Stars, so Kirby has a good deal to work with here and bring down the King quickly. Once defeated, King Dedede collapses to the floor, and the gold cage lowers for Kirby to collect, along with the blueprint for Homing Bomb.

As Kirby is celebrating his victory, however, King Dedede gets up and sneaks behind him during the stage clear screen. Right afterward, Dedede quickly nabs Elfilin with a cage, and then escapes using a flock of Clockers with ropes. Kirby is left to call out for the loss of his friend as the stage ends. He pursues Dedede via Warp Star to the next level: Originull Wasteland.

Differences between difficulties[edit]

There are no differences in the stage between Spring-Breeze Mode and Wild Mode.

Missions[edit]

An Unexpected Beast King has five missions to complete, as follows:

  • "Clear the stage" - Kirby simply has to defeat King Dedede and rescue the three caged Waddle Dees.
  • "Swallow King Dedede's hammer" - After King Dedede drops his hammer, Kirby needs to inhale it (not actually swallow it).
  • "Clear without guarding" - Kirby must defeat King Dedede without getting hit during his Guard.
  • "Clear within 1:30" - Kirby must defeat King Dedede within a minute and 30 seconds.
  • "Clear without taking any damage" - Kirby must defeat King Dedede without taking damage.
