Beryl[Japanese title] is a guest character featured in the Kirby novel series, and makes his guest appearance in Kirby: Meta Knight and the Knight of Yomi, serving as one of its main antagonists. A master of disguise, Beryl steals the Galaxia and attempts to take over Meta Knight's position as the best swordsman of the galaxy by sending him to the underworld and ruining his reputation.

The name "Beryl" comes from a translucent mineral that changes color depending on other mineral impurities, reflecting Beryl's role.

Characteristics[edit]

Beryl is able to change his appearance and voice to disguise himself as any character. While not depicted, in his true form he is described to be a small creature with a flat face.

While callous and snarky with a mask, Beryl is quite cowardly when cornered. He is also very intelligent, as demonstrated by the execution of his complex plan. However, his ego is his downfall, as he prefers to mock his opponents over taking precautions.

Not much is known about Beryl's past. At some point he set out to replace Meta Knight as the best swordsman of the galaxy. To do so, he holds the shopkeeper in charge of checking up the Galaxia hostage and has him make a replica, then locks him up and disguises as him to give the replica when Captain Vul comes for it.

Having obtained the Galaxia, Beryl disguises himself as Meta Knight and goes on a rampage in Dream Land. He is confronted by Kirby and caught off-guard by the Fighter Copy Ability, so he flees. As the heroes discuss this occurrence, he calls them, disguised as Captain Vul, and tries (and fails) to turn the rest against the real Captain Vul. He then properly introduces himself and offers a ransom of 10 thousand Point Stars for the Galaxia to be delivered on Planet Magnus. Meta Knight accepts, intent on taking the sword back by force. However, Beryl has a trap set up, and manages to take out Meta Knight by sending him to Yomi.

Once again disguised as Meta Knight, Beryl continues attacking various locations, harming the swordsman's reputation. While Kirby and company try to catch him, he disguises himself as a boy and says that Beryl dropped a note which lists Planet Charm as the next target. Upon their arrival at Planet Charm, he summons Galacta Knight from a rift to another world. The Meta-Knights give chase, but he traps them in a hole. However, Waddle Dee slams him into this hole while he gloats. Now cornered, he is forced to reveal himself and surrender the Galaxia.

After Meta Knight returns and the battles conclude, he decides on a punishment for Beryl: Kirby would sing and cook for him. Beryl greatly underestimates the severity of the punishment. How he copes with the punishment is left up to interpretation, as it is merely stated to take place in the basement of Castle Dedede.
