This article is about the initial boss forms of Magolor. For Magolor in a general context, see Magolor. For the second forms of Magolor's boss fight, see Magolor (second form) and/or Magolor Soul.
Anyway... MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The time has come for your planet... No! The time has come for the ENTIRE UNIVERSE to bow down to me. And for being such a big help in all of this, your planet gets to go first! Prepare to bow, Popstar! Welcome your new overlord!
— Magolor after betraying Kirby and friends in Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Traitor Magolor (usually referred to as simply Magolor) is the form that Magolor assumes when he betrays Kirby and his friends by taking the Master Crown from Landia and placing it upon his head, turning into a large spectral menace and gaining "limitless power". In this form, Magolor's appearance changes significantly from his original small egg-shaped stature, gaining a wraith-like body similar to that of Necrodeus, his original brown skin becoming pitch-black, longer horn-like ears that curve downward, and fully articulated hands with magic cuffs. His eyes also turn a menacing red and the crown hangs on his head like a large claw gripping it tightly. He gains the ability to casually rip holes in space which lead to Another Dimension, and can also use a large number of powerful magical attacks, such as his giant Magolor Cannon, Black Hole, Deadly Needles, and more. Traitor Magolor is the penultimate boss of Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, fought in Level 8: Another Dimension after defeating Lor & Magolor. Defeating him causes him to mutate into a second form (or Magolor Soul in Extra Mode) for one last confrontation.

Attacks[edit]

Magolor deceived Kirby and stole Halcandra's legendary treasure, the Master Crown! It's up to Kirby to save the universe.

Magolor is revealed as a manipulative mage who tricked Kirby and friends into fixing his ship, then stole Halcandra's legendary treasure, the Master Crown! It's up to Kirby to save the universe!

The following lists all of Magolor's attacks in the Main Mode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second part only.

Attacks - Story Mode
Attack Description
魔力球まりょくきゅう
Magic Spheres
Magolor summons orbs of dark energy that spin in place or hold for a moment, then fire at Kirby. They can be deflected or inhaled. In the second phase, they can be conjured from the background.
キルニードル
Deadly Needles
Magolor summons spikes from the ground which systematically cover the stage. The attack lasts longer in phase 2.
レボリューションボウル
Revolution Orbs
From the background, Magolor fires five rounds of spinning fire that burst on the stage.
Doomer Rift[conjectural title]
Magolor opens a rift, and Para Doomers fly out in a spiral path, harming whatever they touch.
ブラックホール
Black Hole
Magolor enters the background and opens a giant rift in an attempt to suck Kirby in. If Kirby is caught, he gets dealt massive unavoidable damage. This is similar to the black hole that Marx can summon.
マホロア砲
Magolor Cannon
Magolor fires a gigantic laser beam that covers a large portion of the floor. It creates stars on the edge of the screen.
Attack names taken from Japanese strategy guides unless otherwise stated.

Magolor EX[edit]

Magolor EX, as he appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Magolor stole the Master Crown and the Lor from their sacred resting places on Halcandra. He's a liar and a wizard... Defeat him!
— VS Magolor EX Special Page from Kirby's Return to Dream Land
It was in a dusty tome that Magolor first learned about that legendary item. It all sounded like a fairy tale, until he found the Lor and began scheming. It's time to save the universe, Lor...and Magolor!
— VS Magolor EX Special Page from Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

In Extra Mode, Magolor EX sports a new color scheme (which he explicitly transforms into in the "Final Battle EX" cutscene) which is generally red and black, with his face now being white and his eyes magenta. In this form, he attacks more fervently, and most of his moves have new colors and visual effects, but his moveset is largely the same:

Attacks - Extra Mode
Attack Description
魔力球まりょくきゅう
Magic Spheres
Magolor summons orbs of dark energy that spin in place or hold for a moment, then fire at Kirby. They can be deflected or inhaled. In the second phase, they can be conjured from the background. Much faster and more numerous than in Story Mode.
キルニードル
Deadly Needles
Magolor summons spikes from the ground which systematically cover the stage. The attack lasts longer in phase 2. The spikes are summoned much sooner than in Story Mode.
レボリューションフレイム
Revolution Flame
From the background, Magolor fires five rounds of spinning fire that burst on the stage. Faster than the Revolution Orbs used in Story Mode.
Doomer Rift[conjectural title]
Magolor opens a rift, and silver Para Doomers fly out in a spiral path, harming whatever they touch. Faster than in the Story Mode.
ブラックホール
Black Hole
Magolor enters the background and opens a giant unguardable rift in an attempt to suck Kirby in. If Kirby is caught, he gets dealt massive unavoidable damage. Has more suction than in Story Mode. It is similar to the black hole Marx can summon.
マホロア砲
Magolor Cannon
Magolor fires a gigantic laser beam that covers a large portion of the floor. It creates stars on the edge of the screen. It fires much sooner than in Story Mode.
Attack names taken from Japanese strategy guides unless otherwise stated.

Phase 3[edit]

Once Magolor's health meter is nearly depleted in Story Mode or Extra Mode, he will initiate a new phase where he conjures a magical barrier around himself, similar to the third phase with Grand Doomer. This star-shaped shield can only be broken one piece at a time using Kirby's Super Abilities, which can be obtained from certain enemies that are summoned in during this part of the battle. In Story Mode, Kirby uses Monster Flame, then Flare Beam, and then finishes up with Ultra Sword. In Extra Mode, Kirby has to use Snow Bowl and Grand Hammer instead of Monster Flame and Flare Beam. While whittling away at Magolor's shield, Kirby will need to avoid various attacks, including potential wind currents and new Magic Sphere patterns, which are more complicated in the EX battle. Once Magolor's shield is broken, he will try to charge up and replenish a piece of it. Kirby can use this moment to finish him off with Ultra Sword (triggering a mashing sequence in the process), or Magolor can be finished with any other attack, skipping that scene. The entirety of this third phase is skipped in The Arena and The True Arena. Upon defeat, Magolor explodes in dramatic fashion before the whole screen fades to white, leading directly into his second form.

Other appearances[edit]

  • In Kirby Star Allies, Traitor Magolor can be seen in the "FIGHT FOR THE CROWN" and "Bad Boss Brothers" Celebration Pictures, the latter being available only in Version 4.0.0 of the game.
  • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Dress-Up Masks of Traitor Magolor and Magolor EX can be obtained in Merry Magoland for defeating the respective bosses in the Main Mode.

Trivia[edit]

  • During the Theater scene "Let Me Explain Everything", the text used for Magolor's dialogue changes its font once he puts on the Master Crown, going from the typical Pop Happiness font to the more jagged Reggae One. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, both fonts used are different from the original game, going from the sans-serif Rodin Pro B to the serif UDMincho Pr6N B.
  • Landia EX and Magolor EX are the only bosses who visibly transform into their EX forms when encountered, rather than simply being in their upgraded form already. This may be because both characters are seen in pre-rendered cutscenes, and staying in their original forms until they are encountered allows for reuse of the original animations. In Magolor's case, he is seen in his original form during the "Let Me Explain Everything" cutscene and in the Lor EX & Magolor battle, then transforms in the unique "Final Battle EX" cutscene.
  • In the original game, Magolor's gloves feature pink shading in this form. This shading is not present in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Since it is also absent from his concept art and his depiction in the "Bad Boss Brothers" Celebration Picture, this may suggest that the original pink shading is meant to represent the ambient pink glow of the area where he is fought, rather than being an innate part of his design.
