"History of Kirby Fighters"[1] is a musical piece composed by Hirokazu Ando, first appearing in Kirby Fighters 2.

Composition[edit]

This song, and the stage it plays on, represent the culmination of an entire adventure.

True to its name, "History of Kirby Fighters" covers the history of the Kirby Fighters sub-series in musical form. Starting off strong with orchestra hits and synths, this song moves at an energetic pace and perpetually sits at a key of A minor. Immediately after its powerful opening, the percussion and electric guitars invite themselves in to set the mood. "Kirby Fighters" (from the eponymous sub-game) begins to play, which is an arrangement of "Boss Battle" from Kirby Super Star. Though the electric guitars fade into the background at first, they pop back in and take over the lead synths to play the second part of "Kirby Fighters", as both piano and organ accompaniments begin to make their debut. Just as this song reaches its looping point, the instruments reach a crescendo, complete with a descending piano slide and a held note that transitions to the song's next part.

"Kirby Fighters Deluxe" (from the eponymous game) then begins to play, which is an arrangement of "Bouncing Boss Battle" from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. By this point, the synths have established control of the melody, while the percussion starts to stand out more in terms of volume. Though this variant of the theme is a bit slower than the original, it still carries a similar intensity as the cymbals crash, the hi-hats hit, and the electric guitar once again vies for melodic dominance. Getting into the song's second section, the synths take over again, hitting the higher notes of the theme while the background piano duets with a subtle bass that has now started to really shine. Just like before, as this song reaches its looping point, another crescendo is achieved, alongside another descending piano slide and sustained notes. As this happens, there's a sudden increase in volume for the bass guitar.

Finally, this final section utilizes the melody from "Kirby Fighters 2: The Destined Rivals", which is the main theme of this game. The electric guitar takes melodic control as all of the instruments begin to reach their most energetic points, and the organ in the background can be heard playing the first few notes of "Kirby Fighters" several times throughout. A brief orchestra crash accompanied by a just-as-brief rest point lead into the song's next point, where the synths and bass guitar begin to establish their presence once more. Still, it's not long before the synths trade places with the electric guitar again, as "Kirby Fighters 2: The Destined Rivals" reaches its end. The drums in the background hit their peak volume, the organ gets a chance to shine in the foreground, and both background synths and piano help carry the song to its finale, as the electric guitar holds out the last note for a rocking finish as all the other instruments go quiet for a spell. Still, the theme doesn't end immediately, as "Kirby Fighters" starts back up again with more lead synths and bass. The percussion ramps up once more, and all of the instruments get back into their energetic moods, as the track restarts.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

In its debut game, "History of Kirby Fighters" can occasionally be heard playing as the secret song on the Stage of the Partners. The player unlocks this stage for use in standard battles after first clearing Story Mode: The Destined Rivals. Alternatively, also after clearing the Story Mode, a separate version of the song that lacks part of its introduction sequence can be heard on the game's title and mode select screens.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, "History of Kirby Fighters" returns under special circumstances. It can be heard playing in Nutty Noon - Stage 5, but only in Extra Mode, and only on the stage's secret route (Extra Mode's standard path plays "Macho of Dedede" instead). It also appears in the game's Jukebox as track 166.
