"Into the Underground Waterway" is a theme from Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe that plays in the fourth stage of Egg Engines. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa,[1] and can be found as track 60 in the Sound Test (track 109 in the remake's Jukebox).

Composition[edit]

Kirby heading into the underground waterway.

"Into the Underground Waterway" is an eerie and drum 'n' bass-based track mostly set in G mixolydian. It starts melody-less, with eight bars of an electronic bass synth playing an array of quick notes that raises in pitch in each bar, with some percussion only playing occasionally to give some rhythm. For the following eight bars, the bass directly quotes the bassline of "The Last Iceberg" twice, as the percussion properly kicks off. Afterwards, the song's main melody finally starts, as the bassline stops quoting "The Last Iceberg" directly but is still reminiscent of it, in particular in rhythm. The main melody is played by mysterious-sounding synths, and, in contrast with the rapid notes played by the bass and drums, consists of longer notes; in addition, it's accompanied by a couple more synths in the background playing countermelodies that further help with the song's eerie and mysterious vibe. This main section of the song lasts some bars until the main melody resolves, as the countermelodies cease and the song becomes quieter. The song appears to loop as the intro starts to play, but the bass is instead left alone when the intro section ends; it plays a short new section, becoming a bit muffled and being joined by occasional cymbal notes from the drum kit. The song then properly loops, going to the "The Last Iceberg" section.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the reveal trailer of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, as well as in its pre-release demo, this song also played in Another Dimension segments of stages,[2][3] while the final version of the game has the theme "Another Dimension" play in them instead. The reason for the change is unknown.
