Music by game[edit]

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

Jun Ishikawa, sometimes called "the creator of Kirby sound"
One of the most notable Kirby series themes, "Green Greens", debuted in this game.

Kirby's Dream Land soundtrack was composed entirely by Jun Ishikawa, who had to work with the Game Boy's sound limitations — in particular, the muddiness that happened when it tried to play complex chords or rhythms. As a solution, he decided on the opposite — simple chords and rhythms, which would later go on to characterize his musical style.[1]

Being the first game, almost all themes, jingles, and even sound effects became extensively reused in the later titles. These include the title theme "Welcome to Dream Land", the "Green Greens" theme, the "Kirby Dance" theme, the "Bubbly Clouds" theme, "Shooting", "King Dedede's Theme", and the credits theme "A New Wind for Tomorrow".

The game includes a Sound Test, which has every song in the game. For a list of all tracks, see here.

Kirby's Adventure[edit]

Hirokazu Ando
"Butter Building", another iconic and recurring Kirby song, debuted in this game.

Kirby's Adventure is the first Kirby game Hirokazu Ando worked on. Jun Ishikawa helped a bit as well.

Much like Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure is filled with many notable themes that would be later be reused and remixed countless times, such as, "Title Screen / Demo", "Vegetable Valley", "Boss", "Ice Cream Island", "Butter Building", "Grape Garden", "Mountain Stage", "Rainbow Resort", and "Final Boss". Many share a common motif in the form of "Vegetable Valley", as well as a specific abstraction of their tonic.

The game includes a Sound Test, which has every song in the game. For a list of all tracks, see here.

Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]

Tadashi Ikegami

This is the first game Tadashi Ikegami worked on.[2]

As Kirby's Pinball Land is rarely ever acknowledged by HAL Laboratory or Nintendo, so is its soundtrack. The only theme to ever be remixed is "Wispy-Woods Land", though even then - not a lot of times. It's also one of two themes from the game to reappear in any form, the other being the title theme on the The Very Best of Kirby: 52 Hit Tracks album.

The game does not have any form of Jukebox, as such, here is a list of its tracks:

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

Composed only by Hirokazu Ando.

List of tracks here.

Kirby's Avalanche[edit]

Composed by Einosuke Nagao?. Mostly just remixes of past songs. Appears to take inspiration on Kirby's Dream Course music.

List of tracks here.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

"Coo's Theme", one of the three animal friend themes of this game.

Composed by Hirokazu Ando and Tadashi Ikegami.

While each level and stage select has its own music, the former is overriden by one of three Animal Friend themes ("Rick's Theme", "Coo's Theme", "Kine's Theme") when one is selected, and is only heard in gameplay when Kirby is not accompanied by an Animal Friend.

List of tracks here.

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

Composed by Sukezo Ouyama and Ryoue Takagi, of Nintendo R&D1 division. This is the only Kirby game they scored.

List of tracks:

Kirby Super Star[edit]

Kirby Super Star introduced many tracks that would become a staple of the series, with a notable one being "Gourmet Race".

Composed by Jun Ishikawa and Dan Miyakawa. Ishikawa appears to have composed the bulk of the music; Miyakawa has stated that, while he did indeed work on "a certain video game," he was unfamiliar with the composing software of the time and does not believe he contributed much.[3]

Themes for each game mode of Kirby Super Star share similarities with each other. Two recurring motifs, "Peanut Plains" and "Kirby's Triumphant Return", feature prominently in some form in various tracks. The latter in particular would later become a staple in boss and cutscene music.

Other notable tracks from this game include "Boss Battle", "Gourmet Race", "Boarding the Halberd" and "Havoc Aboard the Halberd".

List of tracks here.

Kirby's Star Stacker (Game Boy)[edit]

Composed by only by Hirokazu Ando.

List of tracks:

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

"The Last Iceberg", one of the most iconic tracks of Kirby Dream Land 3, and a good example of the type of music composer Jun Ishikawa aimed for in this game.

Composed by only by Jun Ishikawa. He feared that if he tried to build upon previous Kirby tracks, it would eventually lead to rehashing the past. Around the time the game was being developed, techno and drum'n'bass were on rise, and Ishikawa decided to use these styles, contrasting the orchestra-like feeling of Kirby Super Star.[1][4]

List of tracks here.

Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[edit]

While Kirby's Star Stacker (Famicom) mostly consists of arrangements of songs of its Game Boy version, it features some new songs, such as "VS. Gryll".

Composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando.

List of tracks:

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando. Ishikawa did most songs, with Ando mostly handling cutscene themes and the credits theme.

List of tracks here.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]

Composed by Takuya Maekawa, Yuichi Ozaki and Masami Yone, from Nintendo R&D2. This is the only Kirby game they scored.

List of tracks:

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

The arrangement of "Butter Building" from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land demonstrates the greater hardware capability of the Game Boy Advance over the NES.

Composed by Jun Ishikawa, Hirokazu Ando, Tadashi Ikegami, and Shogo Sakai. As a remake of Kirby's Adventure, this soundtrack mostly consists of arrangements from said game, but there are some new songs included, most notably an arrangement of the "Gourmet Race" theme based on the "Fountain of Dreams" version from Super Smash Bros. Melee. No specific composer credits are given, but all tracks that appear in later games have been credited to Jun Ishikawa, so it is believed that he handled the majority of the soundtrack.

The game includes a Sound Test, which has every song in the game. For a list of all tracks, see here.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

Shogo Sakai
As Kirby Air Ride released during Kirby: Right Back at Ya!'s run, many of the themes are reused from there, such as "Strong Star Warrior" for Checker Knights.
"Air Ride: Fantasy Meadows", one of the songs for Kirby Air Ride composed by series newcomer Shogo Sakai. The game's orchestral musical style was inspired by that of the anime.

Although Shogo Sakai's first work with Kirby was in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, his official debut appears to be in Kirby Air Ride, where he composed many notable songs such as "Air Ride: Fantasy Meadows" and "Air Ride: Magma Flows".

The sound team's goal with Kirby Air Ride was to provide music that accentuated the game's sense of speed while also having an "impressive" range of styles that would stick in a player's mind. The music of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! was also a major influence for the game's original songs.[5] Kirby Air Ride directly uses many songs that were used in the Japanese version of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, one example being "Air Ride: Checker Knights". Some of these songs, such as "Stadium: Drag Race", were also used in the anime; it is unclear whether they were made for the game or anime first.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror is the only mainline Kirby game that neither Jun Ishikawa or Hirokazu Ando composed music for. The soundtrack was composed by Atsuyoshi Isemura and Hironobu Inagaki, both of whom work at Dimps. It is believed that Atsuyoshi Isemura handled the majority of the soundtrack, as its style is consistent with his previous work.[6]

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

Composed by Jun Ishikawa and Tadashi Ikegami. Ishikawa appears to have done the majority of the soundtrack, as most returning tracks in later games are credited to him. Kirby: Canvas Curse stands out among the rest of the series with its very peculiar style, consisting of very corrupted remixes of themes from past games, lacking any regular rhythms, and being very electronic, using almost exclusively digital sounds. Ishikawa stated that, similarly to Kirby's Dream Land 3, he didn't want for Kirby music to get stale.[1][4]

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

"Prism Plains", the main motif of the game, showcases the evolution of its presumed composer Jun Ishikawa's style since its direct predecessor "Grass Land (3)".

While many composers are credited for the music of Kirby: Squeak Squad, it appears Jun Ishikawa did the bulk of the songs, at least the new ones for this game.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Kirby's Epic Yarn[edit]

Tomoya Tomita

Kirby's Epic Yarn was initially conceived as a story centered around Prince Fluff, and was meant to be "a game that little kids could play with their mothers". The first part of the soundtrack was composed to sound like music for a picture book. Good-Feel composer Tomoya Tomita opted to use the piano as the main instrument due to its vesratility, having also considered a guitar; chamber orchestra music was used for variety. As the game gained action elements, corresponding themes were added into the mix.[7]

"Flower Fields" was conceived as the main motif of the game, also featuring prominently in other notable tracks such as "Fountain Gardens" or the title and staff credits themes.

Later in the development, the game was repurposed for the Kirby series, and veteran composers Jun Ishikawa, Hirokazu Ando and Tadashi Ikegami joined the team. They worked on acoustic arrangements of earlier Kirby themes, as the majority of the soundtrack had already been composed, and it was decided to keep the music Tomita had worked on.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

Composed by Shogo Sakai.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

"Sky Tower", one of the most recurring songs from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Many of this song's motifs appear in other tracks.
"Road to Victory", which first appeared in the Kirby for Nintendo GameCube trailer and can be considered a darker version of "Sky Tower".

The soundtrack for this game was composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando. Due to being the product of 11 years of work on a home console game, it includes diverse motifs. Among the oldest tracks are "Sky Tower" and "Road to Victory", the latter of which is used for the Kirby for Nintendo GameCube trailer. Many tracks such as the aforementioned bear similarities with each other and can be seen as "light" and "dark" counterparts.

Aside from "Road to Victory", the game has several leitmotifs that reoccur throughout the soundtrack, those being "Four Adventurers: Cookie Country", "The Adventure Begins", and "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler".

A separate category of music for this game includes tracks with internal filenames "KbyW" and specific motifs that can be heard in "Beyond the Hill", "Onion Ocean", "A Stroll on the Ocean Floor", "Perfect Sledding Weather", as well as an unused track with a soundfont reminiscent of Kirby: Squeak Squad's; this motif first appeared in Yin-Yarn's boss music in Kirby's Epic Yarn but is more prominent in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

The game includes a Sound Test, which includes a majority of the tracks heard in the game. For a list of all tracks, see here.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

The main theme of Kirby: Planet Robobot is The Noble Haltmann, present in a good part of the game's music. Said song is also the first lyrical Kirby song to appear in a game, albeit without real vocals.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

The main leitmotif of Kirby Battle Royale is Let Battle Commence!, present in many songs of the game.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Yuuta Ogasawara
One of Ogasawara's compositions, "Wind Blowing on Earthfall", which left Shinya Kumazaki amazed.

The first song composed for Kirby Star Allies was "Sudden Happy Ending", which was intended to be a stage theme. It ended up become the basis of many of the game's songs, in the form of Twinkle☆Traveler. The other leitmotif, and main theme of this game, is Twinkle☆Stars, which accidentally sounds like A New Wind for Tomorrow from Kirby's Dream Land.

Kirby Star Allies has the most songs of any Kirby game, mostly due to its updates after the game's release. In particular, most of the songs added in said updates are arrangements or medleys of songs of previous games.

This was the first game Yuuta Ogasawara composed for. He joined HAL in the middle of the game's development, and was at first assigned sound effects and sub-game themes. He eventually was asked to compose music for the game's later half, and also worked on various songs present in the updates. While he was at first worried about being able to reproduce the so-called "Kirby sound", after analyzing the work of his seniors he managed to understand that Kirby music at core didn't have complex melodies, on the contrary, they were very simple.

At first, Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando were reluctant about one of Ogasawara's compositions, "Wind Blowing on Earthfall". As it drew closer to being finished, Jun Ishikawa claimed it sounded like an Ando song, while Hirokazu Ando claimed it sounded like an Ishikawa song, giving Ogasawara the confidence that he had finally gotten it right. When the song was finished, the two of them realized that Ogasawara was aiming for a stronger sound than the series had seen before. Shinya Kumazaki was particularly impressed by it, saying that it reminded him of "Rainbow Across the Skies" and gave him the feeling of "a town with an autumn breeze that I finally reached in the latter half of a grand world of an RPG."[8]

Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Vanpool composer Kiyoshi Hazemoto, in his first contribution to the series, demonstrates his mixture of classic Kirby songs with a rave-like twist.

Super Kirby Clash features three different composers: series veterans Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazu Ando, as well as Kiyoshi Hazemoto from Vanpool. While the exact involvement of each composer is unknown, due to file names, few known song credits, and musical styles, it's believed that Kiyoshi Hazemoto was involved with most, if not all, new arrangements and remixes of past songs featured in the game. Said remixes are notable for leaning heavily in an electronic, rave-like style, and often adding new percussion to songs, as well as extending their intros and/or outros.

Another notable aspect of Super Kirby Clash's soundtrack is the vocal song "Green Tree Memories from Kirby": while vocal tracks had existed in the past, either in albums outside of games, or with lyrics proved in-game without the song being actually sung in-game, this marked the first time a vocal track was present in a Kirby game proper.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

"Welcome to the New World!", the game's main theme and second vocal song in the Kirby series.
This was the first game Yuki Shimooka composed original pieces. One of them, "Moonlight Canyon", in particular stood out for Shinya Kumazaki.

The main leitmotifs of Kirby and the Forgotten Land are Welcome to the New World! and Running Through the New World.

This game notably has very few remixes of songs from previous games, mostly only reusing standard jingles such as the Kirby Dance theme.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

In Japanese, Kirby's Dream Buffet is called Kirby's Gourmet Fest, which is reflected in the game's soundtrack — the game's music is characterized by a jazz band style, with a heavy emphasis on brass instruments. It is also notable for remixing several tracks from obscure spin-offs, such as Kirby's Pinball Land, Kirby's Dream Course, Kirby's Block Ball or Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble. The game is also the first since Kirby: Squeak Squad to have musical contributions from the entirety of HAL Laboratory's sound team.
