Final boss
A final boss (sometimes referred to as a last boss) is the term used to describe the last boss in a video game, or a mode within a game. The Kirby series is no stranger to this idea, with most games in the series utilizing bosses, and by extension final bosses. There are a couple things that set apart final bosses from regular bosses:
- A final boss is naturally the last boss that appears in a game or mode.
- Final bosses are almost always the strongest foes in their respective games or modes, often having the most health and having multiple phases.
- Final bosses are often fought in their own level at the end of a game's Story Mode, such as The Fountain of Dreams or Mind in the Program, though this is not always the case.
- Final bosses almost always have their own unique boss music not heard during any other gameplay in the game they appear in, such as "Vs. Marx" or "Fatal Blooms in Moonlight".
Often, Extra Modes also have their own final bosses, whether it be a complete unique boss or a variant of the Story Mode's final boss. On few occasions, the "true" final boss of a game's Story Mode can only be accessed once a certain milestone has been reached, with the penultimate boss of the game only being a final boss in the bad ending. Each of the many Boss Endurance modes found throughout the series naturally also has a final boss. In most Boss Endurance modes, such as The Arena, the final boss is a mostly unaltered version of the Story Mode's final boss, but tougher variants or difficulties, such as The True Arena, almost always have a unique final boss, most often being a Soul boss.
List of final bosses
The following table lists every final boss in the Kirby series, in chronological order:
Final bosses in the Kirby series | |||
---|---|---|---|
Boss | Game(s) | Mode(s) | Description |
King Dedede |
Kirby's Dream Land | Normal Game Extra Game |
King Dedede is the first final boss in the series. He can use his hammer, inhale, and Super Dedede Jump to battle Kirby in his castle atop Mt. Dedede. Kirby is able to attack back by inhaling the Dropped Stars left by some of his attacks, and spitting them back at him. In Extra Game, King Dedede uses his attacks more aggressively. |
Nightmare |
Kirby's Adventure Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land |
Normal Game Extra Game Boss Endurance |
After Kirby defeats King Dedede once again, Level 8 starts, and Nightmare is revealed to be the true villain of the game. King Dedede uses his inhale to launch Kirby and the Star Rod towards Nightmare's Power Orb, whom Kirby must defeat using the Star Rod before reaching the ground and losing a life. Afterwards, Nightmare turns into his Nightmare Wizard form, using more attacks to try to take down Kirby. When defeated, Nightmare explodes, leaving a large crater in the moon, but Kirby manages to escape using his Warp Star. Nightmare is also the last boss in the Boss Endurance mode. |
King Dedede |
Kirby's Pinball Land | Main Mode(?) | King Dedede returns as a final boss, more stuff here. |
Robo Dedede |
Kirby's Dream Course | Single-player Single-player Extra Game |
Kirby's Dream Course only features one boss, known as Robo Dedede. It is a robotic version of King Dedede, piloted by the king himself. This boss is fought in its very own Course, which is the last Course of the game's single-player mode. Robo Dedede has the ability to summon smaller robots called Chibi Dededes to attack Kirby. |
King Dedede |
Kirby's Dream Land 2 | Story Mode | In the last stage of Dark Castle, a possessed King Dedede appears as the final boss of the game if Kirby has not collected all Rainbow Drops, resulting in a bad ending. Otherwise, King Dedede is the second to last boss. |
Dark Matter |
Story Mode BOSS |
If Kirby managed to collect every Rainbow Drop, he will duel the real villain, Dark Matter Blade, using his newly acquired Rainbow Sword to reflect his attacks. After defeating the swordsman, Dark Matter will reveal his true form, transforming into a large eyeball known as Real Dark Matter. During this phase, Kirby will slowly fall down to the ground, and if he does not defeat Real Dark Matter fast enough, he will lose a life because of it. Dark Matter is also the final opponent Kirby will face in this game's Boss Endurance mode. | |
Brobo |
Kirby's Block Ball | Main Mode(?) | If Kirby was unable to get the Border Line score in every previous stage, Stage 10 will be the last stage on his journey, resulting in a bad ending. This stage features the unique boss Brobo. |
King Dedede |
King Dedede is the true final boss of the game, appearing in Stage 11. Kirby must defeat him to collect the Sparkling Stars and save the day. | ||
King Dedede |
Kirby Super Star Kirby Super Star Ultra |
Spring Breeze | Due to Spring Breeze following essentially the same plot as Kirby's Dream Land, King Dedede naturally reappears as the final boss of this mode, using the same attacks to try to defeat Kirby. This time, however, Kirby has the ability to use Copy Abilities and summon Helpers to take down the king more easily. |
Dyna Blade |
Dyna Blade | Dyna Blade is the only boss Kirby will have to face in the last stage of the titular mode, Dyna Blade's Nest. This giant bird is able to fly across the stage, breathe out fire, and grab Kirby using her claws and beak. After her defeat, it is revealed that the reason for her havoc was that she was simply trying to feed her chicks. | |
Wham Bam Rock |
The Great Cave Offensive | Wham Bam Rock is an enormous boss that Kirby will have to battle at the end of The Great Cave Offensive. This creature always hides in the background, and his attacks consist of using his large rocky hands to try to smash, punch, and grab Kirby, drop rocks from the ceiling, and shoot projectiles out of his fingers. | |
Meta Knight |
Revenge of Meta Knight | Though originally introduced as a regular boss in Kirby's Adventure, Meta Knight reappears as the main antagonist and final boss of Revenge of Meta Knight. Meta Knight's battle takes place in Chapter 7 of the mode. Like in Kirby's Adventure, he offers Kirby a sword, but this time, Kirby is able to deny the offer. Meta Knight now has the additional ability to summon tornadoes. After the swordsman's defeat, Kirby rushes to leave the crashing Halberd using Wheelie Rider, but Meta Knight flies after Kirby in an attempt to stop him from fleeing. | |
Marx |
Milky Way Wishes The Arena |
After Marx tricks Kirby into summoning Galactic Nova in Milky Way Wishes, the jester reveals his true form, and Kirby has to chase after him to stop him from taking control of Popstar. Marx has the abilities to teleport, shoot deadly boomerangs, summon Black Holes, and much more. After his defeat, Marx gets launched into Galactic Nova, which promptly explodes. Marx is also the last opponent faced in The Arena. | |
King Dedede |
Kirby's Dream Land 3 | Story Mode | In the same fashion as Kirby's Dream Land 2, King Dedede, possessed by Dark Matter, is once again the final boss in the bad ending, which happens if Kirby did not collect every Heart Star. However, this battle has a second phase where Dedede's stomach turns into a big mouth that tries to eat Kirby and shoot orbs at him. The battle takes place in Stage 7 of Iceberg, atop Castle Dedede. |
Zero |
Story Mode Boss Butch |
If all Heart Stars were obtained, they assemble into the Love-Love Stick, and the last level of the game, Hyper Zone, is unlocked. In this level, Kirby will first have to rematch Real Dark Matter using the Love-Love Stick, while optionally getting help from Gooey using Mock Matter. After Dark Matter's defeat, the final boss reveals itself: Zero. This giant eyeball is able to summon miniature replicas of Dark Matter and even shoot blood from its body. After its first health bar is depleted, Zero's center rips out from the rest of its body and tries to chase after Kirby in a last-ditch effort. This is also the last fight in Boss Butch. | |
Miracle Matter |
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards | Story Mode | Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards once again features a bad ending. In this game, the final boss of this ending is Miracle Matter, who appears in Stage 4 of Ripple Star. This boss has seven different forms based on all of Kirby's Copy Abilities in the game, including Bomb, Burn, Cutter, Ice, Needle, Spark, and Stone, with each one having its own attack. Miracle Matter can only be damaged by the Copy Ability or Star Bullet corresponding to its current form. |
0² |
Story Mode Boss Battles |
If Kirby and his friends collected all Crystal Shards to avoid the bad ending, the final level of the game will be unlocked: Dark Star. After a short platforming stage with help from their friends, Kirby and Ribbon reach 0², the true final boss of the game. Together, they use the Ribbon's Crystal ability to take down this angelic eyeball by attacking its eye and halo to reveal a spiny green tail, which can be attacked to deal damage. The duo can also destroy 0²'s wings to make it much slower, but 0² can fight back by shooting blood out of its eye and green gas out of its tail. This boss is also the final opponent in the Boss Battles mode. | |
King Dedede |
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble | Story Mode Extra Game |
King Dedede reprises his final boss role in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, being faced in Lvl 8-4 of the game. Right before the battle starts, the king grabs a star piece to become invincible, but this can be knocked out of him by using the nearby cannon to shoot Kirby at him while he's recovering from a charge attack. Other than that attack, Dedede can also swing and throw his hammer at Kirby and use his inhale attack. In Extra Game, the wall behind King Dedede is lined with spikes, making the cannon a lot more dangerous to use. |
King Dedede |
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land | Meta Knightmare | Since the battle with Nightmare is skipped in Meta Knightmare, King Dedede appears as the final boss instead, battling Meta Knight in Stage 7 of Rainbow Resort. King Dedede's fight is identical to the one in Story Mode, using the same attacks as in Kirby's Dream Land but with an added hover. |
Dark Mind |
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror | Story Mode Boss Endurance |
After Dark Meta Knight's defeat in the Dimension Mirror, a portal opens up, and the Kirbys are sucked into it. Just in time, Meta Knight manages to throw his sword into it, which Kirby swiftly grabs. Only then, the first form of Dark Mind reveals himself. This form has many different attacks involving shooting stars at Kirby, spinning around his mirrors, and dropping deadly bombs. This form is fought four different times, with each battle gaining new attacks and a different arena. After these battles, Kirby is taken to a new arena, with Dark Mind having transformed into a giant laser-shooting eyeball. Once this battle is also cleared, Dark Mind tries to flee, but Kirby uses his star-shooting Warp Star to take him down, which eventually makes the staff credits roll, allowing Kirby to keep shooting Dark Mind to gain as many points as he can. Dark Mind is also the final boss of Boss Endurance, but only one battle per form takes place. |
Drawcia Soul |
Kirby: Canvas Curse | Story Mode | After Kirby defeats Drawcia Sorceress, the witch morphs into a spherical ball of paint to become the Kirby series' first Soul boss: Drawcia Soul. This ghostly creature's primary attack involves summoning Para Matters, which the Magical Paintbrush will have to hit back at her. Similar to Marx, she can use an aggressive variant of Shooter Cutter, and often teleports around, during which she can be stunned by the Magical Paintbrush to let the spherical Kirby dash into her. This boss also introduced the attacks Bound Pound, Deadly Sun, and Splash Rush, which would all become staples for future Soul bosses. |
Dark Nebula |
Kirby: Squeak Squad | Story Mode Extra Mode Boss Endurance |
When Daroach finally gets his hands on the Treasure Chest and opens it up, he immediately regrets his decision, as he gets possessed by an ancient evil and turns into Dark Daroach. Following his defeat, he drops his Triple Star cane, and a small, dark star pops out of him and flies away from Kirby. Kirby grabs the cane and begins chasing the star through a short stage while avoiding enemies and boulders. Eventually, the star properly transforms into the boss Dark Nebula. This boss has three different forms it uses to attack Kirby: a fire form which can create a large pillar of flames and burn the floor, an ice form which can shoot a laser downward to freeze the floor, and an electric form which can shoot lightning to electrocute all borders of the arena. In all forms, Dark Nebula can also slowly move around and shoot stars at Kirby. This boss is also the last one confronted in Boss Endurance. |
Masked Dedede |
Kirby Super Star Ultra | Revenge of the King | Due to Revenge of the King following a very similar plot to Spring Breeze, King Dedede once again appears as the main antagonist and final boss of the last stage. This time, the king has a brand new mechanical hammer and a power-amplifying mask, taking on the persona of Masked Dedede. The fight takes place in an arena similar to the one in Spring Breeze, but this one notably has an electrified fence above it, and the only audience member is Bandana Waddle Dee. Kirby is also offered a hammer before Masked Dedede jumps into the arena and the fight begins. Masked Dedede is naturally able to use Inhale, Head Slide, Hover, Super Dedede Jump, and regular hammer attacks, but can also use his new hammer to shoot out missiles and flames, as well as quickly spin around the arena, which Kirby will have to hover over while carefully avoiding the electricity. After his defeat, Dedede's mask breaks, and he is once again sent flying out of his castle. |
Wham Bam Jewel |
Helper to Hero | In Helper to Hero, Wham Bam Rock is seemingly the final boss the Helper will have to face. However, right after his defeat, a stronger version of the boss takes his place: the "Wham Bam king" Wham Bam Jewel. This boss has a very altered design from Wham Bam Rock, having hands made out of diamonds instead of rocks, wearing a crystal crown and golden earrings, and having three eyes. Other than this, Wham Bam Jewel uses largely the same attacks as Wham Bam Rock, with some minor differences. He can unlatch crystals from one of his hands to drop onto his enemies, drop bombs from his hand which Kirby can inhale for the Bomb ability, and shoot blasts from his finger tips in a very similar fashion to Master Hand & Crazy Hand. | |
Galacta Knight |
Meta Knightmare Ultra | Meta Knightmare Ultra follows Meta Knight going through most stages of Kirby Super Star. However, a major difference is that he does not fight Marx at the end. Instead, he summons Galactic Nova himself and wishes to fight the greatest warrior in the galaxy. Galactic Nova grants this wish and summons the powerful Galacta Knight. As his name implies, Galacta Knight is similar to Meta Knight in many ways, being a circular creature with a mask and wings, though Galacta Knight is almost constantly hovering over the ground. Galacta Knight has many attacks similar to Meta Knight, using his lance to perform slash attacks, shoot Crescent Shots, and thrust down when in midair, move around as a tornado similar to Mach Tornado, create a large tornado that moves around the stage, and glide around while bouncing off the ground. Additionally, he is able to create shockwaves, summon pillars of fire, shoot a beam that rotates around the stage, and even summon clones of the Meta-Knights. | |
Marx Soul |
The True Arena | At the very end of Kirby Super Star Ultra's The True Arena, a cutscene shows Marx after his defeat in Milky Way Wishes absorbing a piece of Galactic Nova's power and transforming into the zombified Marx Soul. Marx Soul can use harder variants of all of Marx's attacks, using Shooter Cutter twice in a row, growing six thicker vines during Seed Attack, and performing all of his attacks much faster. Marx Soul also has two attacks inspired by Drawcia Soul; Splash Marx and Deadly Ball. The former attack's paint blobs can be swallowed for the Paint ability, but unlike in its other appearances, this ability is practically useless against Marx Soul, only dealing a tiny amount of damage. After his defeat, Marx Soul lets out a bloodcurdling screech, splitting in two before exploding. | |
Traitor Magolor |
Kirby's Return To Dream Land Kirby's Return To Dream Land Deluxe |
Story Mode | After defeating Landia, a cutscene plays, showing Magolor picking up the Master Crown and becoming Traitor Magolor. Kirby and co. follow after the Traitor while riding on Landia, after traversing through Another Dimension, Traitor Magolor brings out the Lor Starcutter and engages Kirby and co., after they defeat the Lor, Magolor shoots them down and they land in the final boss arena, and they attack Magolor directly. Magolor has several attacks ranging from Black Holes to Revolution Flame, even flipping the camera upside down and attacking. After depleating his health, Magolor summons a magic barrier as well as enemies to attack Kirby and Co., but one of those will offer a Super Ability, Allowing Kirby to break the barrier. It takes five hits to break, after which, Traitor Magolor will enter his second form. |

Welcome to the New World!
| ||||||||||||||
|
"Welcome to the New World!" (also stylized as "WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD!") is a song from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It is the anthem of the new world, and was a popular song back when the world was still inhabited by its original residents. Its singer, Neichel, was a famous diva in the new world.[1]
The song's melody serves as the basis for many songs in the game's soundtrack, and it is one of the few Kirby series songs to have fully sung lyrics.
Credits
- Vocals: Neichel
- Lyrics: Shinya Kumazaki
- Composition: Tadashi Ikegami
- Arrangement: Taro Nagata and Yuuta Ogasawara
Game appearances
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
The song is the basis of many of the game's tracks. Sections of it can also be found in many others.
The song in itself is named and performed in-game multiple times. The first time it's heard is in the cutscene of the same name, which occurs in the Point of Arrival stage near the bridge that leads into Waddle Dee Town. When Car-Mouth Kirby uses Turbo Dash to knock the bridge down in order to drive into Waddle Dee Town, the impact will cause the nearby radio to turn on and begin playing the song.
After the player completes Lab Discovera or Forgo Land for the first time, the full version of the song (titled "Welcome to the New World! (Full)" in-game) will play during the credits accompanied by photos of Kirby's adventure. Once the Waddle Live! Corner Stage is fully upgraded, The Deedly Dees can be requested to play an instrumental version called "Welcome to the New World! (Bonus Track)".
The theme is also remixed numerous times:
- "Ready to Go!" - An electronic guitar remix used as the title screen theme.
- "Blue, Blue Breeze" - An arrangement that plays during the first Arch Mouth and Coaster Mouth sections.
- "Waddle Dee Town" - An acoustic remix used as Waddle Dee Town's main theme.
- "Originull Wasteland" - A dramatic arrangement with elements of "Running Through the New World" and "The Wastes Where Life Began". Used when hovering over Originull Wasteland on the world map.
- "Forgo's Treasures" - An electric-like remix used for Treasure Road stages in Originull Wasteland and Redgar Forbidden Lands.
- "Redgar Forbidden Lands" - A dramatic arrangement with elements of "Running Through the New World" and "Plundering Beast Battle". Used when hovering over Redgar Forbidden Lands on the world map.
- "Elfilin" - A calm, piano remix used after defeating Leongar in Lab Discovera and at the start of the "Slumbering, Caged Leon" cutscene.
- "The Fate of Two Worlds" - An intense cutscene theme used after freeing Elfilin from Fecto Elfilis.
- "Soaring Determination: No Night Is Eternal" - The ending cutscene of the game that also features hints of "A New Wind for Tomorrow" at the end.
- "In Pursuit of Victory" - A blood-pumping rock remix used in The Ultimate Cup Z's rest areas prior to rounds 1-11.
- "Try Again Tomorrow... Again!" - The theme that plays after failing in The Ultimate Cup Z.
- "Finding the Light" - The theme for the cutscene with the same name. It starts out with violin, eventually adding more instruments as the song goes.
- "A Thriving, Peaceful Town" - A remix of "Waddle Dee Town" with more instruments, as well as added motifs of other themes.
- "Got 'Em All! Gotcha Machine Master" - A remix with many instruments. Used when checking the Figure Collection upon collecting every Figure in the game.
- "NEW WORLD: 100%" - A short jingle based on "Welcome to the New World!" that plays when achieving 100% completion.
Some themes only partially include "Welcome to the New World!":
- "Interview" - An arrangement of "Running Through the New World" that includes hints of "Welcome to the New World!" throughout.
- "Enter the Fiery Forbidden Lands" - A dramatic minor arrangement of both "Running Through the New World" and "Welcome to the New World!".
- "The Beast Pack's Final Stand" - An intense remix of "Welcome to the New World!", "VS. Dangerous Beast", and many unique sections.
- "The Dream Discoveries Tour" - An audio track that features "Welcome to the New World!" and "The Smell of a Scary Beast".
- "Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit" - A largely original track that features sections from "Welcome to the New World!" and "The Battle of Blizzard Bridge".
- "A Full-Speed Farewell from the New World" - An electronic guitar remix of "Invincible Candy" and "Welcome to the New World!".
- "Isolated Isles: Forgo Dreams" - The level hub theme for the eponymous mode based on "The Raging Lion Roars" and "VS. Psychic Power Given Form" that includes hints of "Welcome to the New World!".
- "Morpho Knight" - The boss theme for Morpho Knight that includes a remix of "Welcome to the New World!" in its second half.
- "Kirby, the Beasts, and the King" - The ending cutscene theme for Isolated Isles: Forgo Dreams that contains hints of "Welcome to the New World!" and "The Raging Lion Roars".
- "Hero Interview" - A triumphant arrangement of "Running Through the New World" and "Welcome to the New World!".
- "From Those Who Departed for Space" - A medley of "A Trip to Alivel Mall", "Running Through the New World", and "Welcome to the New World!", used as the theme for the credits seen in Waddle Dee Cinema.

Kirby's Dream Buffet
If the player has Kirby and the Forgotten Land save data on their Switch, then after completing their first Gourmet Grand Prix, three music tracks from the game automatically unlock and have a chance to play during races. The full vocal version of "Welcome to the New World!" is one of these tracks, labelled as "Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Bonus Song 3" in-game. Much like "Green Tree Memories from Kirby" and the "King Dedede Medley", the music won't switch to a different track during the minigame portion of the Gourmet Grand Prix.
Other appearances
The short version of the song, edited to seamlessly loop, is used as the default theme for the Kirby and the Forgotten Land Maximus Cup in Tetris 99. "Ready to Go!" is used on the results screen after coming in 1st place using said theme.
The song appeared as a special performance during the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival, where it was sung as a duet between Neichel (the anonymous, female singer) and Makiko Ohmoto (the voice of Kirby). The first half was sung in the new world language, while the second - in Japanese. In addition, "Soaring Determination: No Night Is Eternal", an arrangement of "Welcome to the New World!", was incorporated into Kirby Endings medley, alongside "Milky Way Wishes: Staff Credits", "Project K-64", the ending theme from Kirby: Squeak Squad, "Return to Dream Land", and "A New Wind for Tomorrow".

Trivia
- In the various promotional trailers for Kirby and the Forgotten Land such as the "Copy Abilities and Co-op" trailer, an instrumental version of "Welcome to the New World!" is used. This version differs from the instrumental found in the game; it features an electric guitar and organ playing the main melody, while the game version uses a flute.
- According to Shinya Kumazaki, he first wrote the Japanese lyrics and then translated them into the new world language. The sung language is a mixture of corrupted Japanese and English. One of the words in the language is the singer's name, Neichel (ネイチェル), which means "nature" and is a corrupted Japanese spelling of "natural" (also used in the level Natural Plains).[1]
- The Chinese and Korean lyrics are direct translations of the Japanese lyrics. The lyrics for the other languages seem to be based on the English lyrics.
- The singer's real-life identity has not been revealed, but she appeared in-person for the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival.
- Shinya Kumazaki has mentioned that "Welcome to the New World!" is both a song that represents its origin game and "the hopes of people who dream of departing for a new world" (新たな世界への旅立ちを夢見た人々の希望).[3] The lyrics of the song, in particular in Japanese, are worded in a way that indeed evoke a sense of invitation to leave for a new world, in particular to a "land of dreams" exactly as Leongar mentions in the game. Whether that is meant to be taken literally (as in, that this song was used to invite the habitants of the new world to leave for a "land of dreams"), or figuratively, is unknown.
- "Welcome to the New World!" is Tatsuya Kamiyama's favorite theme from Kirby and the Forgotten Land.[4]
