“ | Under water, Kine can get the job done. Strong currents are no problem! Kine's a great swimmer. | ” | — Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instruction booklet |
Kine is an ocean sunfish and one of Kirby's six Animal Friends, making his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is distinguished by his bright blue body, his wide circular eyes, and his gaping mouth, big enough to fit Kirby inside when they travel together. As expected for a fish, he is an exceptional swimmer, helping Kirby to battle strong water currents when paired up with him. Kine can also travel on land, but much more slowly, resorting to short hops in order to move forward, and being unable to fly or jump from the air. Pairing up Kine with Kirby allows for a number of different methods of attack based on what Copy Ability the pink puffball has, though these vary heavily in effectiveness.
Kine makes his most prominent appearances in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby Star Allies, where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby, Gooey, or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation from Rick and Coo. Kine also has a supporting role in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and develops a crush on Tiff.
Characteristics
Kine takes on a distinctive shape as a fish with a wide but flat circular blue body, with large circular eyes and a gaping mouth with heavy lips on one side, triangular yellow dorsal and ventral fins, and wide but stubby limbs and tail. This bodily configuration serves him well enough in the water - where he can swim with great speed - but on land, it leaves him clumsy, only able to hop about slowly. This clumsiness is particularly notable when he is paired up with Kirby and the other Animal Friends in cut-scenes, where he is often the last in line, and often snubbed in favTemplate:Or of the typically more versatile Rick and Coo, who can sometimes be seen bullying him. Like the other Animal Friends, Coo is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Kine is particularly fond of apples, and likes to play with them in cut-scenes. He also has a tendency to latch onto Kirby using his mouth, whether Kirby wants him to or not.

Kirby's Dream Land 2
Kine makes his first appearance in Kirby's Dream Land 2 as one of Kirby's three Animal Friends. He is first encountered in the second stage of Ripple Field, where Master Green is guarding him, making him the last of the three friends to be found by Kirby. Apart from appearing in a number of stages, the sunfish is also seen in four level intros: in the Ripple Field intro, he unites with Kirby after being fed an apple; in Iceberg, Kirby leaves him behind in favTemplate:Or of Rick; in Cloudy Park, he latches onto Kirby while the latter is stuck in a cloud; and finally, in Dark Castle, he apparently falls asleep as Kirby and his friends are preparing to enter the castle.
When teamed up with Kine, Kirby is contained inside the sunfish's mouth. Being a fish, the latter is at a disadvantage on land, where he moves slower than other friends and continuously makes small hops as his method of "walking"; despite this, his jumping skills are equal to those of Rick. Kine's main strengths become apparent underwater, however; while paired up with him, Kirby may inhale foes while underwater and is also capable of swimming much faster than usual by repeatedly pressing the A button while diving. This increased swimming speed lets Kirby and Kine bypass strong currents, enabling them to reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible, as well as making certain sections of stages easier to survive.
Like other Animal Friends, Kine will enhance any Copy Ability that Kirby possesses while the two are traveling together, turning it into a new, unique power. Unlike other abilities in the game, all of Kine's combination abilities can be used underwater to their full extent.
Combinations
Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
---|---|---|
Burning | Kine spits large fireballs from his mouth, which slowly travel in a straight line. | |
Cutter | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which grows as it travels further. | |
Ice | Freezes enemies around Kine. Using the power for too long temporarily turns Kine into an ice cube, paralyTemplate:Zing him. | |
Needle | Using this power causes Kirby and Kine to grow spikes all around them. | |
Parasol | A large parasol appears from Kine's mouth, which can be used as a shield for a limited time. | |
Spark | A light bulb appears from Kine's mouth, which can harm foes and illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors. Letting go of the B button launches it forward, exploding when it collides with something or the button is pressed again. | |
Stone | Lets Kirby assume his stone form inside Kine, making him sink downwards and defeat enemies. |
Kirby's Star Stacker
Kine returns in Kirby's Star Stacker, alongside the other two friends (Rick and Coo) from the previous game. Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Kine blocks for a reaction to take place.
Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the sunfish is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he makes small hops while moving like in Kirby's Dream Land 2, as well as in two of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Hard mode shows him and Kirby riding across the sea in pirate costumes, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.
Kine also shows up in the Super Famicom remake of Kirby's Star Stacker, where he appears in the story mode cutscenes and has the same role as a Friend Block in gameplay.
Kirby's Dream Land 3
In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kine makes a reappearance, once again acting as an Animal Friend for Kirby to unite with. He is first located in the third stage of Grass Land alongside Coo, once more making him one of the final friends to be found. The fish is also seen in the intro of Ripple Field, where he quarrels with ChuChu over which of the two gets to stay united with Kirby, as well as the Hyper Zone intro, where he, together with the other friends and King Dedede, watches as Kirby ascends into space.
Up to and including his ability to bypass water currents, Kine acts the same in this game as he does in his debut appearance, but possesses a slightly different array of combination abilities. He is the preferred target of the blue Propeller enemy, causing it to move faster. Abandoning Kine in favTemplate:Or of a different friend causes him to look devastated, tears appearing in his eyes.
A female sunfish named Mine appears in the fifth stage of Grass Land. Reuniting her with her husband, Kine, is required to obtain her Heart Star.
Combinations
Base Ability | Appearance | Description |
---|---|---|
Burning | Kine spits a ring of fire from his mouth, which slowly travels in a straight line and breaks Star Blocks without stopping. | |
Clean | While the Y button is held, a plunger protrudes from Kine's mouth. All enemies touched by the plunger will stick to it; these can be pushed into other enemies to harm them or launched as projectiles by letting go of the button. | |
Cutter | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which destroys Star Blocks without stopping and shrinks as it travels further until it has fully disappeared. | |
Ice | Temporarily turns Kine into an immobile, invincible block of ice that slams onto the ground and freezes all enemies it touches. Using the power while dashing causes him to slide until he thaws. | |
Needle | Using this power causes Kirby and Kine to grow spikes all around them. | |
Parasol | Kine turns to face upwards as a large parasol appears from his mouth, which guards him against attacks from above and slows his fall. | |
Spark | A light bulb appears in Kine's mouth while the Y button is held, which can harm foes and briefly illuminate dark areas, revealing hidden doors and symbols. The bulb breaks after a few seconds, keeping it from giving light; letting go of the button and then activating the ability again fixes it. | |
Stone | Lets Kirby assume his stone form in Kine's mouth, making the fish face downwards and slam onto the ground. |
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Although Kine does not appear in person in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, using the Stone-Cutter Power Combo sometimes causes Kirby to transform into an invincible sculpture of him upon activating the ability. Unlike the other statues, the Kine form is immobile apart from being able to turn around, both on land and in water. Using the ability again while transformed shatters the sculpture, returning Kirby to his regular form.
Template:KCC KPP
In [[Kirby: Canvas Curse|Template:KCC KPP]], one of the images that the player can connect the dots to draw in the Paint Panic boss game depicts Kine.
Kirby Super Star Ultra
In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kine, alongside the other friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2, appears as a statue once more, this time being one of the possible results of using the Stone ability. The Kine sculpture is completely immobile and behaves identically to all other Stone forms, differing from them only in looks.
Kine also cameos in the sub-game Kirby Card Swipe alongside with the other Animal Friends.
Kirby Mass Attack
Kine makes a cameo in the Kirby Mass Attack sub-game Kirby Brawlball, a Pinball game with Kirby elements. The sunfish acts as the "stopper" between the flippers at the bottom of the main playing area, serving as a "safety net" by catching Kirby (the ball) in his mouth and spitting him out again when he would otherwise have fallen through the drain. Afterward, Kine disappears and can only be reactivated by hitting all three mole-like targets on each side of the lower area. Kine is also responsible for bringing a second Kirby into play if the slot machine stops on three Kirbys by spitting the surplus one into the playing field.
Kine also appears in the sub-game Kirby Quest, where he appears alongside Rick and Coo in the "game over" screen.
In Kirby Brawlball, Kine appears as a temporary drain stopper, and shoots Kirby back up should he fall in.

Template:KRtDL KAW
Kine once more cameos as a Stone transformation in [[Kirby's Return to Dream Land|Template:KRtDL KAW]]. Instead of receiving his own, separate statue, however, he is part of a sculpture consisting of all three of Kirby's original Animal Friends (Kine, Rick and Coo). As expected, this result only differs from other Stone forms in appearance and size.
Notably, while not counting as an appearance of Kine himself, his theme song is used in some stages in Onion Ocean.
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition
In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Kine makes a number of appearances: naturally this includes his roles in the games featured in the collection, but he also appears in places in the Kirby's History hallway, and has a few appearances in the Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Book as well.
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Kine appears as a stage hazard on the Coo's Forest stage of the Kirby Fighters subgame. In this appearance, Kine just flops on the ground, having no special attack that can harm the fighters. Colliding with Kine does 16 damage to the fighters as per with other Animal Friends that appear on the stage.
Kine also appears in two keychains, the first of which depicting him with Kirby in Kirby's Dream Land 2, and another of him and Kirby performing the combination Spark attack in Kirby's Dream Land 3.
Kirby Fighters Deluxe & Kirby Fighters 2
Kine appears in Coo's Forest once more in both Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, retaining his role as a stage hazard.
Template:KatRC KatRP
Kine has a cameo in Elline's Secret Diary and can also be seen briefly in the Kirby Submarine transformation animation.

Kirby: Planet Robobot
Kine makes an appearance on two stickers in Kirby: Planet Robobot. One is based on artwork of him with Kirby from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and the other is artwork of his Friend Block from Kirby's Star Stacker.
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe / Super Kirby Clash
Kine cameos in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, appearing in the background in the Village, sleeping on a bench. He appears there after clearing the ordeal against Landia EX for the first time.
In Super Kirby Clash, Kine appears again, this time in the background of the Port Village after clearing the "Tough: Frost Kibble Blade" Story Quest.
Kirby Battle Royale
Kine can be seen in the audience in the Slam Hockey battle mode. He only appears in the Stretch Arena.
Kirby Star Allies
- Main article: Rick & Kine & Coo
Kine appears as a Dream Friend, rolled together with Rick and Coo into a single playable character. Kine appears when swimming, and can use ice powers in the water, though doing this for too long will freeze him. Kine is a much faster swimmer than the other characters, though, on land, he can only flop around. When flopping around on land, he can provide the Splash Power Effect and put out fires. When underwater, he can use his "Ice Kine" power to supply the Blizzard effect, though being able to position properly to grant it to allies can be tricky.
Kine also appears in two of the Celebration Pictures, namely "A Dream Above the Clouds" and "Crazy Mischief in the Stars".
