"Game Over" is a recurring jingle from Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake that plays when Kirby runs out of lives and gets a Game Over. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Composition[edit]

The exhausted Kirby takes a nap.

"Game Over" is a moderately short jingle in C major and swung 4/4. It closely mirrors the eponymous jingle from Kirby's Dream Land in key, seventh chord harmonies, swing meter and melodic structure. The first note begins with a delayed attack. This jingle is distinguished by a brief rising chromatic passage and fourth instead of the latter's supporting alteration and rising seventh. The second half of the melody descends chromatically rather than diatonically. Finally, concluding the jingle is a major third played by a glockenspiel, which simultaneously resolves the melody and sets up its instability.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, "Game Over" plays when Kirby gets a Game Over in the Story Mode and Extra Mode, as well as when player 1 loses all health in The Arena and The True Arena. It can be found as track 73 in the Sound Test (56 in the remake's Jukebox).

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, "Game Over" can be heard when getting a Game Over in Story Mode, The Arena, and The True Arena, and is available as track 040 in the Jukebox. Getting a Game Over in Dededetour! instead plays a different jingle.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, features an acoustic arrangement of "Game Over" that reprises its main role. It can be found as track 62 in the Music Room.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, the jingle plays when getting a Game Over in Story Mode, and appears as track 048 in the Jukebox. Much like Dededetour! in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the side mode Meta Knightmare Returns has a separate Game Over jingle. Uniquely, The Arena and The True Arena also have their own failure jingle.
