Cappy is a common enemy that appears in most games in the Kirby series, making his debut appearance in Kirby's Dream Land. Cappy takes the appearance of a spotted red mushroom when he has his cap, but without it, he is revealed as a creature similar in look to a Japanese haniwa figure: he is pale yellow and has no feet or legs, but has a pair of stubby arms which he hides along with his black eyes and dot mouth under his cap. Unlike many other reoccurring enemies, Cappy has had few variations, and has never had more than a minor role in the games in which he appears.
Cappy's main method of attack is no more complicated than bumping into Kirby, which also hurts Cappy in turn. If Kirby tries to inhale Cappy, the creature's cap goes into Kirby's mouth instead of the whole Cappy. Once without his cap, Cappy will typically panic or sulk, and can then be defeated by spitting his cap back at him or inhaling him separately. Cappy can also be defeated with or without his cap by using any other attack.

Kirby's Dream Land
Cappy makes his debut appearance along with Kirby himself in Kirby's Dream Land, appearing only in Green Greens. Notably, it is occasionally possible to inhale a whole Cappy in this game.
Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Cappy returns in Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, appearing in color for the first time in the former. His appearance and behavior are largely unchanged, though he does manage to appear in a fair few stages.

Bumping it a second time removes him from the field and conveys 1200 points. A short time after being defeated, Cappy returns.

Notably, the Cappy that appears in Round 4 won't lose his cap, but four cap-less Cappys defend Big Cappy in the following round.
Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra
Cappy returns as a common enemy in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, serving the same purpose as functioning the same way as usual. In the Revenge of the King mode in Kirby Super Star Ultra, the Poison Mash enemy appears in place of Cappy. He also appears on a card in Kirby Card Swipe and as a target in Kirby on the Draw.

Kirby: Canvas Curse
Cappy makes an appearance in Kirby: Canvas Curse as a common enemy. He mainly sits in place or waddles around slowly. If tapped with the Magical Paintbrush, his cap will fly off when he is stunned, which can hurt Kirby if it hits him. As such, it is generally safer to take out Cappy using a Touch Dash or Copy Ability.
In Kirby: Canvas Curse, Cappy appears in the following locations:

Cappies are also conjured by Drawcia Sorceress during her boss fight. These Cappies come in four, and are a sickly blue color, similar to Poison Mash.
Kirby Mass Attack
Cappy appears in two of Kirby Mass Attack's Sub-Games, Kirby Brawlball and Strato Patrol EOS. In the former, he appears on the board during the Whispy Woods boss fight, and requires two hits to defeat (with the first knocking off the cap). In the latter, Cappy appears as a standard enemy to be shot down in the early stages of the game.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Cappy reappears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe jumping around and occasionally throwing his cap as usual. Starting in this game, if Cappy is left idle after his cap is taken away, he will notice its absence and slump over in sadness before returning to his usual behavior. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Cappy reprises his role as a target in Kirby on the Draw.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
“ | When that strange light came to steal his colors, Cappy found himself utterly frozen with fear. It was a new kind of fear too--the fear that he wouldn't have a very important role in this new story. He was right. | ” | — Figurine description from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. |
Cappy appears in the intro of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse where he, Waddle Doo and Broom Hatter get their color sucked away by Claycia. He would later appear as a collectible figurine. He is not faced as an enemy in this game.
Kirby: Planet Robobot
Cappy appears in Kirby: Planet Robobot with the same behavior as in previous games. He has a new, mechanized look in this game: his mushroom cap resembles a hard hat, and he has a metallic coil around the base of his body. His usual look appears in the Copy Ability Room, as well as the hidden area at the end of Access Ark - Stage 8 EX.

In Kirby Battle Royale, Cappy does not appear as an enemy, but he can be seen in the audience in cutscenes, as well as in the crowd for Robo Bonkers and in the passenger car of the train for Ore Express.
Kirby Star Allies
Cappy returns in HD for Kirby Star Allies, otherwise going unchanged since Kirby's Return to Dream Land. He cannot be made into a friend.

Kirby's Dream Buffet
Cappy returns as a common enemy in Kirby's Dream Buffet, here given a sugar-coated look to match the food motif. He mainly serves as an obstacle on race courses, and can also be seen carrying strawberries in the Minigame mode. Some Cappies can be found with a pile of five strawberries on their heads in the Free Rolling course.
In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!
- Main article: Cappy (anime)
In the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Cappies make up the primary intelligent race of creatures that reside in Dream Land. Here, they are portrayed without their mushroom caps, and instead come in various shapes and sizes and sporting various articles of clothing and hair/facial hair. Several hundred Cappies live in the sole established settlement of Dream Land called Cappy Town, which is led by Mayor Len Blustergas and subservient to Castle Dedede.
While most of the Cappy villagers are not explicitly named, several of them have more distinct roles and names and are recurring characters in the show. Examples include the aforementioned Mayor Len, Chief Bookem, Professor Curio, and Mabel, to name a few.
In the Kirby novel series
In the Kirby novel series, Cappy appears in Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, as one of the race's many contestants, and makes a minor appearance in Kirby: The Dream Onsen is a Good Hot Spring♪. He is a peaceful resident of Dream Land with a timid personality. He is always seen with his mushroom hat, which sometimes pops off to show his expression. Here, Cappy is an individual character, rather than a species.
In Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!, Cappy appears at the beginning, where he is talking with Walky. Cappy brings up a rumor about a giant footprint being spotted in Dream Land, with growling noises heard near it. Cappy thinks there could be a monster in Dream Land, but Walky laughs it off and does not believe him. Right when they finish talking, a giant spaceship lands nearby, and the two head over to meet a TV producer named Kizario, who plans to film a race in Dream Land. Walky is excited, but Cappy is skeptical about this, and is unsure about trusting Kizario. At the race, Cappy's vehicle of choice is the Jet Star, which flies up into the sky immediately. Cappy is terrified at this, screaming that he is afraid of heights. This makes the other contestants realize that they should be careful when choosing a vehicle. Throughout the rest of the story, Cappy is always grouped with the rest of the racers, and does not stand out.
